"FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - January 25, 2011 - NEW YORK, N.Y. and TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Pfizer Inc. and Progenics Pharmaceuticals, Inc. have learned of a United States market recall of alcohol prep pads and swabs manufactured by the Triad Group. In the interest of patient safety, Pfizer and Progenics are alerting U.S. patients and physicians to Triad’s recall. Triad® Alcohol Prep Pads are packaged for use with the kit presentation of RELISTOR® (methylnaltrexone bromide) Subcutaneous Injection in the U.S. The RELISTOR vial and other components of the kit are not affected by the defective Triad alcohol pad. RELISTOR sold in single vials also is unaffected by this recall.

Pfizer and Progenics advise patients using the RELISTOR kit not to use the Triad alcohol prep pads included in the RELISTOR packaging for 1 X 7 kits and 1 X 2 starter kits. When preparing to take their RELISTOR injection, patients should use an alcohol prep pad from a company other than Triad, or use a sterile gauze pad with isopropyl alcohol.

Shipments of RELISTOR kits have been suspended until the alcohol pads can be replaced, which will be done as quickly as possible to enable patients to continue to receive RELISTOR. Triad alcohol prep products are not included in RELISTOR sold as single vials or in RELISTOR kits outside of the United States or with other Pfizer medications.

     Dealing with grievous illness is a difficult and stressful process for patients and their loved ones. 
     Just know that you are never really 'alone', even in those worst moments at three in the morning when you are crying your eyes out 'alone' in your hospital or sick bed.  God is there with you in a very real way, along with the souls and angels He sends to comfort you.
     When I tell you not to be afraid, it is with the the voice of experience.  Not only have I been blessed with attending many as they have left 'this life' for the next one, but I've had my own near-death experience myself, which I will write about soon.
     In the meantime, take the information I provide here and benefit from the best of both the world of science, as well as the great Realm of our Creator.
     As an atheist-agnostic for the first 37 years of my life, a student and practitioner of biomedicine, I can only tell you that the more and more I learned about the wonderments of the human body and our universe, the more convinced I became that there just HAD to be a GRAND DESIGNER!

Dear Ones:
     Here is an immediate follow-up to my yesterday's article about the huge recall of Triad 70% alcohol prep pads and swabs for use with injectable drugs.
     Triad pads are marketed in the US, Canada and Europe under the following brand names: Triad, Cardinal Health, PSS Select, VersaPro, Boca/ Ultilet, Moore Medical, Walgreens, CVS, Conzellin...and perhaps 'others'.

     Unfortunately for consumers of injectable drugs on the consumer level, a number of pharmaceutical companies are now being 'forced' to issue what are known as 'voluntary recalls' of their products which are 'co-packaged' with Triad-manufactured alcohol prep-pads and/or swabs.
     In the world of 'FDA-speak', the term 'voluntary recall' means that a manufacturer acknowledges a problem of some sort. They are 'agreeing' to act 'preemptively' (presumably for the benefit of the medical consumer) so as not to be FORCED to do so through the use of legal action on the part of the FDA.
     Typically, it benefits a manufacturer to 'cooperate' with the FDA (and other regulatory agencies).
     In the case here, Genentech has chosen to include alcohol pads/swabs from a subcontractor and therein lies the conundrum for Genetech and doubtless other companies like it.
     The conundrum is this: While the medical consumer 'reads' that Genetech assures them that the drugs they manufacture themselves are SAFE, they DO acknowledge that the 'alcohol prep pads and swabs' packaged with those drugs MAY NOT BE.
     This, of course, raises the following questions:


1--Why in Heaven's name didn't Genentech DO THEIR OWN INDEPENDENT STERILITY AND STABILITY STUDIES ON THE TRIAD PRODUCTS THEY PACKAGED WITH THEIR PRODUCTS? Or...

2--If Genetech DID DO the above studies on the Triad pads they chose to include in their packaging...WHAT WERE THE RESULTS REGARDING THE EFFICIENCY AND EFFICACY OF THE TRIAD PRODUCTS TO PERFORM ACCORDING TO INDUSTRY STANDARDS?


3...In other words, did anyone at Genentech check to 'see' if the Triad pads they packaged with Genentech's Boniva Injection, Fuzeon, Nutropin A.Q. Pen, Pegasys, and TNKase were actually capable of DOING the job they are meant to do, i.e. to 'work' as a suitable antiseptic on the skin?


4--Perhaps Genentech chose to 'farm out' the Triad Product STERILITY and STABILITY studies to an outside, INDEPENDENT lab. If so, what were the results? Was the testing comprehensive and conclusive? Has this independent lab been 'tested and certified' as meeting the standards for independent testing facilities, which includes maintaining qualified employees?
     I sound like a task-master here and there's a reason for it.
     Much of what I am writing about here is not 'common knowledge'. Consumers need to know these things in order to preserve and maintain their good health.

     These comments stem from my own personal experience working with federal regulatory agencies in the fields of drug and cosmetic manufacturing.
     One thing I constantly emphasize is that we ALL must advocate for ourselves and others in this day and age of 'mixed-messages' and 'signals' on the subjects of Health Care reform and medical coverage and treatment.
     No one will disagree that things can get 'confusing', so please read on and empower yourself.
     First of all, the FDA really does try to protect the consumer, if not literally, in theory at least.

     Secondly, company executives and chief R & D and QC/QA 'officers' are held PERSONALLY ACCOUNTABLE for each and every thing they 'sign off' on. We in the 'scientific community' know that our 'reputations' with the various government alphabet agencies is of the 'cradle-to-grave' type of responsibility.
     This means that the quality and integrity of your work in the lab as far as the feds are concerned travels 'with you' over the course of your career and then some.
     I know, having been interviewed, deposed and 'asked to testify' in cases from years gone past.
     To all young researchers, I say, "Don't sign off on ANYTHING that you are not prepared to vigorously defend at any time in the future. KNOW your stuff and be upstanding and accountable."
     Being a 'chief chemist' as I was is all well and good and calls for a great deal of accountability since I was the one who drafted, tested and 'justified' the 'protocols' our company used for testing in-house.
     Because of that and the fact that we were constantly developing new products, I got to know the FDA (and v.v.) pretty well.
     Eventually, I grew quite 'used' to being 'shadowed' at work and almost enjoyed the 'challenge' of working under such pressure.
     But I was also the LAB SUPERVISOR, which meant that I had to 'sign off' on not just the chemistry part of things, but on the microbiology and hard components (packaging, wound pad material, etc) departments' work, as well.
     My strong micro and biology background served me well and I was capable of understanding what I was called to 'sign-off' on before it got to the 'administration', after which point things were pretty much out of 'the lab's hands'.
     The reason for this is that a company V.P. as well as the President had the power to 'approve' of and 'release' anything at all they chose, no matter what the 'lab' had to say about things.
     I am sure that you, dear Readers, understand that manufacturing is MONEY and that there is a natural 'temptation' to 'okay' product with minor defects.
     Human nature being what it is, unscrupulous manufacturers will do the same even in cases of 'severe defect', for such is the sorry state of our species.
     Not surprisingly, some manufacturers play a game of 'cat and mouse' with the FDA with the hope that no defective product and/or packaging will be detected.
      In most cases, no harm is done and we have all been the victims of purchasing less-than perfect products.
     But there are very real 'cut-off points' where a major health and well-being concern comes into focus. Such is the case where an ALLEGEDLY contaminated alcohol prep pad or swab intended to CLEANSE AN AREA OF SKIN is in circulation.
     I say 'allegedly' because it is unknown at this time whether the Bacillus cereus contamination is widespread through-out all the Triad-manufactured alcohol pads and swabs.
     If so, this means that every pharmaceutical company who 'uses' these Triad pads with their injectables has a major, major recall problem, no matter how much they try to 'tone it down' and I'll tell you why.
     The very fact that 'bad wipes' are packaged with some injectables will make the average consumer wary of the injectable, as well.
     It may be true that all of Genetech's products are, indeed, sterile...but it begs the fact that the accompanying antiseptic pads/swabs may not be. Just what does that say about Genentech's Quality Control over-all?
     In cases like this, I'll tell you what's going on 'behind the scenes'. Genentech is having to inform consumers and keep them up-to-date on the status of their recall situation.
     And the FDA likely is asking about the independent testing of the Triad pads, as in 'did Genentech do any at all, either in-house or by a third party or both?
     The FDA is likely asking Genentech to 'pull their retains' (retained samples) of the following drugs they manufacture:

--Boniva Injection (ibandronate sodium)-used to treat osteoporosis

--TNKase ( Tenecteplase)-a 'thrombolytic' or clot-busting agent used in cases of acute myocardial infarction ('heart attack'). TNKase is which is a synthetic form of the well-known naturally derived 't-PA' (tissue plasminogen activator)

     Genentech will also be asked to retest and provide samples of the raw materials...and especially the WATER...used in then manufacture of the injectables above.
     The FDA will want full micro and chem panels done on these, not so much, perhaps, because the FDA thinks the injectables are contaminated with B. cereus or some other microbe, but because in it's 'voluntary recall notice', Genentech IS STATING THAT 'THEIR PRODUCTS ARE SAFE'....even as they state the Triad pads accompanying their products may not be!
     THE FEDS WILL TELL GENETECH TO 'PROVE IT'.
     Genentech, like Triad, will have to 'prove' they are utilizing 'GMP's--Good Manufacturing Practices, et. al.
     As I've said previously, we don't know of the extent and origin of the Bacillus cereus contamination of Triad-manufactured alcohol prep pads and swabs, but I'm following up on it.
     Perhaps it will 'sizzle out' as a low-grade incident.
     And perhaps not.
     But as it stands today, yet a THIRD recall notice has gone out to a company besides Genentech and that is for Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceutical for it's Betaseron. Also known as interferon beta 1-b), this is ALSO packaged with Triad's 'potentially contaminated' alcohol prep products.

     Betaseron is used for cases of 'relapsing multiple sclerosis'. By definition, the patients needing Betaseron are ALREADY suffering from improperly functioning immune systems.
      The last thing they need is to contract a cutaneous, subcutaneous or even systemic INFECTION courtesy of contaminated alcohol pads.
     I pray that all parties involved work fairly, swiftly and expediently to remediate this situation so that none are hurt. I pray that the 'best scientific minds' are on this.
     Most of all, I pray that Genentech and Bayer will for once discard their industry's incessant consideration of the bottom-line and 'do right' by the souls who use their products.
     If that requires total product replacement so that patients are comfortable using their injectables, may these drug manufacturers be of good conscience and see to those replacements at no cost to the patients.

     With Thanksgiving 'Week' already here, it might be a good time to 'read and review' TSA scanning and personal search techniques in use in American airports today.  Here is the 'Pat-Down' link for you: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/pat_downs.shtm 
     A thorough read here reveals NO MENTION OF any 'changing of gloves between searches', a fact which is very disturbing.  Doesn't the TSA realize that MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS and easy to transmit?
     Here is what the Centers for Disease Control, the CDC, has to say about 'MRSA Spread': "MRSA infections, as with all staph, are usually spread by having contact with someone’s skin infection or personal items they have used, like towels, bandages, or razors that touched their infected skin. These infections are most likely to be spread in places where people are in close contact with others—for instance, schools and locker rooms where athletes might share razors or towels."

     Modesty, pervert, pedophile and dignity concerns aside...here is my PARTIAL list of health concerns for the modern airline traveler today:
     1)  Gloves are not changed between 'pat-down' and body exams.  FIX:  DEMAND that the TSA worker change into new gloves for you.  In an ideal case, they would also be required to vigorously wash their hands (and arms) before re-gloving as is done in medical settings and wear face masks when they are contagious.
     2)  The following is a partial list of infectious agents which can be spread from person-to-person on dirty hands/arms, gloves, security wands, chairs, tables and floors.  There is risk not only to the person being examined, but to the TSA Officer, as well.  In addition, careless manipulation of diseased or infected areas can spread and exacerbate any existing infection.  How ironic in this 'day and age' of repetitive hand-sanitizing with 'gels' of all sorts, our Federal Government has chosen to turn our airports into fulminating 'Petri Dishes' capable of transmitting all sorts of pathogens.
    Here are the infectious conditions that concern me the most for now:
   --MRSA, as discussed above.
   --Tinea corporis ('ringworm'-fungal infection of the body, NOT a 'worm') including: Tinea capitis (fungal infection of the head),Tinea cruris (jock itch) and Tinea pedis (athlete's foot)  The most obvious source of infection is the 'floor' where people must stand in (perhaps damp) stocking feet or barefooted.  Ringworm may occur anywhere on the body and one form of Tinea can be spread to a place where it ordinarily does not occur, especially in the unsanitary conditions found in airport screening areas.Here's the National Institute of Health LINK for you:

     Will 'care be taken' with those who have Herpes zoster (shingles) infections? Running hands over 'herpes zoster-infected' skin not only PICKS UP viral particles, but is bound to be EXTREMELY PAINFUL for the poor person being examined.
     ALSO I WOULD ASK, "HOW OFTEN ARE THOSE 'BINS' SANITIZED...if EVER?
   --Diseases spread by feces and/or water: Any 'swiping down below the waistband' with anything or any hand, gloved or not is subject to becoming contaminated with fecal pathogens.  Diseases of concern include: cholera and typhoid fever.
     "Salmonella Typhi lives only in humans. Persons with typhoid fever carry the bacteria in their bloodstream and intestinal tract. In addition, a small number of persons, called carriers, recover from typhoid fever but continue to carry the bacteria. Both ill persons and carriers shed Salmonella Typhi in their feces (stool)."

     The bottom-line:  contamination with feces on gloves is a potential problem whenever 'hands have the potential to go to mouth'.  This is of special concern with children and the elderly.  And it goes for all the E. coli pathogens, as well.
     Then there's:
   --Trachoma: Primary: person-to-person transmission by ocular and respiratory secretions. Secondary: insect vectors such as house flies. A rub-of-the-eye, a cough, sneezing, drooling and 'unchanged dirty TSA Officer gloves' will spread this parasite.  You might recall that it was a major problem with Ellis Island immigrants.

   --Ascariasis: "an infection of the small intestine caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, a large roundworm. The eggs of the worm are found in soil contaminated by human faeces or in uncooked food contaminated by soil containing eggs of the worm. A person becomes infected after accidentally swallowing the eggs. The eggs hatch into larvae within the person's intestine. The larvae penetrate the intestine wall and reach the lungs through the blood stream. They eventually get back to the throat and are swallowed. In the intestines, the larvae develop into adult worms. The female adult worm which can grow to over 30cm in length, lays eggs that are then passed into the faeces. If soil is polluted with human or animal faeces containing eggs the cycle begins again. Eggs develop in the soil and become infective after 2-3 weeks, but can remain infective for several months or years."

     Here's a hypothetical situation for you 'international travelers':
     The 'guy in front of you' has 'eggs on his shoe soles.  He is asked to remove his shoes and puts his bare sweaty feet where his egg-laden shoes were.  He's 'wanded' and then has a 'pat down' which includes his feet because he wears multiple 'corn pads or some other orthopedic device.  The TSA Officers gets 'eggs' on his gloves, doesn't change them and then goes onto his next 'pat down' which includes handling this next traveler's handkerchief.  The handkerchief 'goes to the traveler's mouth' at some point later that day, he swallows some 'eggs' and voila, our hapless traveler now has roundworms.
     Sounds implausible?  Don't bet on it for this and any number of other parasitic diseases.  You just better hope and pray the person in front of you with bare feet doesn't have secondary or tertiary syphilis!
     Yes!  That's what I said.  My next area of concern is:
   --Sexually transmitted disease (STD's): Easily transferred from moist surface to moist surface, such as body-to-glove and back again and in some cases from simple skin-to-skin contact (LGV). STD's which traditionally occur in 'one area', can also inadvertently be spread to other areas, such as the eyes and the mouth under the unsanitary conditions found in airport screening areas. Incontinence pads, catheters and sanitary napkins can be a rich source of pathogens, which when even cursorily 'brushed by a TSA' glove can become a virtual 'disease swab' for the next hapless traveler to be touched by those unchanged gloves.

   --Herpes infections: Genital Herpes herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2 and occurs on the genitals and rectum.  Per our friends at the CDC, "Transmission can occur from an infected partner who does not have a visible sore and may not know that he or she is infected."

     How does that make you feel?  Sure a person with HSV-1 (with 'oral Herpes' also known as a cold sore) will stand out to the observant TSA Officer.  But will that Officer change gloves?  Will that TSA Officer 'take care' with open Herpes sores and the clothing, gloves, etc that they may touch during removal and examination?
   --What kind of gloves does the TSA use?  Let's say they're 'polynitrile' (which they appear to be from photographs and would be a likely choice since they need to be both chemical and solvent-proof).  If LATEX is used, some people are tragically ALLERGIC to LATEX and anaphylactic shock can ensue with improper manipulation of body parts in these allergic individuals.
     A 'swipe of the mouth'...or any other body cavity, for that matter, can mean DEATH due to breaching of the mucosal barrier in latex-sensitive individuals. 
     Is this taken into account?
   --Pertussis ('Whooping Cough')--a very contagious disease only found in humans and is spread from person to person. People with pertussis usually spread the disease by coughing or sneezing while in close contact with others, who then breathe in the pertussis bacteria.      Pertussis USED to be under control, but infection rates have risen globally and also in the United States as some parents have become lax with vaccinating their children despite recommendations to do so.
     Airports with world travelers are a 'contagion gateway' for this disease with all this 'up close and personal' scanning and body examinations.  What a wonderful breeding ground for disease our airports have become.  Consider these:
   --Common cold, influenza, 'bird flu', 'swine flu', viral pneumonia--all of these viruses are easily transmitted.  If there is another 'flu pandemic', current TSA regulations will virtually guarantee global contamination for travelers everywhere.  Changing gloves...or even washing hands plus changing gloves is insufficient to protect one traveler from another or to protect the traveler and TSA Officer from each other if and when one is infected with a bad case of 'the flu'.
     And we must consider:
   --Bacterial pneumonia and Tuberculosis: the transmission risks are obvious to all of us.

     Then there are my old friends found in homeless shelters and soup kitchens and the various mental health and other facilities I have worked in:

    --Scabies,head lice (as well as pubic lice, above), mites, fleas (yes-fleas will infest HUMANS when no other warm-blooded critters are available!).  And just think of the burgeoning BED BUG PROBLEM we are having with all these insect 'hitch-hickers' hitching a ride on imported goods, furniture and clothing!  Watch out for those chairs in airports until the regular 'fumigating' programs kick in.
     (And then I will write a piece on the connection between pesticide overuse and human cancer rates....but that's a different story, for now.)
     And so you have the best of my advice for you.  Please note that one of the disease categories that I HAVE NOT included above in the list of easily-transmitted human diseases is HIV infection.  This virus requires direct body-fluid-to-blood contact which is unlikely to occur in the typical TSA screening scenario today, unless internal exams become mandatory.
     There's no way, no how that HIV is 'casually' or even 'easily caught' by being exposed to urine, feces, specks of blood, copious tears or saliva spat upon the face, otherwise I would have been dead long ago.
     I also have not included hyper-contagious/dramatic pathogens such as the Ebola, Marburg and Lassa viruses for the simple reason that typically the 'host' does not 'live long enough' to create any substantial 'chains of infection' in the public in an airport setting.      So there you have it and what I've listed here is in no way comprehensive.  We tell our children NOT TO share combs, hairbrushes, toothbrushes and so forth with others.  Yet we subject them to 'this'. 
     We allow them and ourselves to either be exposed to unwarranted irradiation and/or to be subjected to a 'pat-down' by someone with dirty gloves and perhaps capable of transmitting some disease to us.
     And equally disturbing is the possibility of our INFECTING OTHERS because our 'intrusive TSA' Officer examiner did not bother to or did not KNOW any better than to change his or her gloves.
     We cover our coughs with our 'arm sleeve' or hand.  Then the nice TSA lady pats that sleeve, thus getting a good gloveful of whatever we may or may not be carrying.  Now SHE is at risk for illness just by discharging her duties and she puts others at risk.
     No thanks. 
     It just doesn't seem right, does it?

Dear Readers:
     Recently, it was brought to my attention that this book, "It's Perfectly Normal" has been chosen by the Stamford School System as a 'textbook' for our public school children.
     Now...I'm no 'prude', but I have to be v-e-r-y careful with what I put on my  blog here...because I must maintain a 'family friendly site'. 
     Although I discuss an exorbitant amount of POLITICS, GAY SEX, RELIGION and FUNDING, this is the FIRST TIME EVER that I've had difficulty formatting an article and related images due to the sexual content of--a children's book, of all things.  It is a book by a Planned Parenthood aficionado named  Robie Harris.
     Call me old-fashioned, but we're talking full frontal and 'rearal' nudity that I can't even show you here!     Ironically, it's all over this 'CHILDREN'S BOOK', "IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL"!    If the choice of this book as a literacy text strikes you as 'odd', you're in good company and I urge you to email me at BarbaraKSexton@aol.com, and/or leave a public comment below and be sure to contact the Stamford School System Administrators no matter what you do (email below).
     I think the video I've chosen below will pass muster for 'PG decency' so you can get an idea of this book which has been so very controversial for years now.  You may even be a little shocked.
     But when it comes to REAL shock value....STAMFORD has got other school systems BEAT! 
     You see, this book, "It's Perfectly Normal" has been chosen as a LITERACY TEXTBOOK in Stamford Public Schools for FIFTH GRADERS!
     Yep!  Not for sex ed or science...this prurient little masterpiece (prurient for little 10 year olds and below, that is) is destined for LITERACY coursework for grade-schoolers.  You hear right--'For LITERACY'.
     This 'literacy' textbook choice was made on behalf of all of us taxpayers in Stamford.  Any teachers refusing to use the book are under threat of being fired.  Any parent wishing to 'opt out'...well, they just won't have that option.
     Also, any parent or anyone who may not be in agreement with the PRO-GAY, PRO-ABORTION preaching of our sex tome here, likewise, need not expect that their opinions are being considered.  It is obvious that the opinions of moderate-to-conservative parents and other taxyers are simply being ignored in Stamford, CT.  The choice has been made and the Board of Ed knows best.
      Say what you will about this literacy text book choice made by Mary Jennings, Administrator, Board of Education (e-mail: mjennings@ci.stamford.ct.us ) under the direction of Dr. Joshua P. Starr, Superintendent jstarr@ci.stamford.ct.us , it's sure to be fascinating to the ten years olds (and their younger siblings) who manage to get their hands on it.
     I don't know what is going on in Administrator Jennings and Superintendent Starr's mind using a graphic sex book as a 'literacy tool'.  From what I understand, it is a 'done deal', so parents be on the look-out for some interesting reading material coming home soon -if they let the kids take their copies of 'It's Perfectly Natural' home, that is.
     To me it's just a really, really weird choice and other books just as interesting, could have been chosen to...er...'promote literacy'.  I just don't get why Stamford chose one with so many graphic images.  Seriously.  
     Shock value?-yes.  Good judgement?-no.  Oh, the students will remember this one, alright.
     It's bad enough that education has been 'dumbed down' for our children and now we have this, too.  Whatever 'innocence' the may yet have, should be preserved for as long as possible.  What's with all this 'sexualizing of young children in grade school'? 
     No, it is NOT true that all ten year olds are ready to be propagandized by the progressive-lib's and their 'take' on all things related to carnal knowledge.  Is it asking too much for our EDUCATORS to keep their personal POLITICS out of the lives of our YOUNG CHILDREN? 
    NOT all 10 year olds are engaging in sex regularly.  No matter how progressive-lib Democratic educators try to extrapolate their sociomedically 'skewed data' generated these days, it just doesn't correlate for all of Stamford's public schoolers.  We and our families are not all the same.        
     So, dear educators:  you may have succeeded in  'dumbing down our kids across the board', but you will not 'sleaze it up' for them no matter how hard you try. 
     We know you 'can't resist trying to cultivate them  when they're young--under the guise of 'doing what's in their best interest, of course.
     But it won't work.  As the children mature under the strong tutelage of their loving parents and guardians, they will discern the truth for themselves.
     Older siblings will 'spill the beans' over that 'funky book their kid brother or sister is reading in 'literacy'.
    When they do, dear educators, they won't be complimenting you...they'll be dissing you. 
     They'll be dissing you for giving this age-inappropriate book to children in an inappropriate setting, your selfish reasons being obvious.
     I stay current with CDC and WHO health and education stats as a biochemist, so if feel free to challenge me 'epidemiologically' if you choose to.

Talk to someone about the use of 'crystals' in alternative medicine and there is a good chance that they will laugh at you or 'humor you' and perhaps listen out of curiosity. But the scientific use of crystals is so far beyond the imagination of some people, that nothing less than a crazy piece such as what I've written here will open up their minds up to any such understanding.

And open up their minds, they will, if their lives or that of a loved one, depends on it. But before I continue, first some background food for thought. Please bear with me as I stand in awe of the work of researchers DR. CHEREPANOV & COLLEAGUES AT IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON & HARVARD UNIVERSITY. I don't know anything of the 'faith lives' of these brilliant people, but that they have furthered the understanding of all of us in our quest to get closer to understanding God's Master Planning and Design is undeniable. I, for one, am grateful and wish to share some thoughts from a religio-scientific standpoint, easy enough for all of us to understand. If you like puzzles, deductive reasoning, logic and are just plain curious, you will enjoy the intellectual calisthenics. And surely we can all join in THANKING these researchers for the GREAT GIFT they have given all of humanity at a point in history when we need all the encouragement we can get.

So let us begin:

Crystals are used as cleansing, balancing, adjusting, absorbing and energy-dispelling tools in any number of healing traditions, including laying-on-of-hands. In my personal experience, animals and comatose humans are excellent demonstrators of the effectiveness of this extremely effective therapy. Crystals not only help healing and supplement both traditional and nontraditional forms of therapy, but they can also increase energy in a person who is energy-deficient. I'm willing to entertain the skepticism of those who do not believe my claims, but I will point them to any number of scientific references that detail the use of crystals (quartz, specifically, both natural but more commonly man-made, nowadays) in electronics. This will prove to be a case where 'the scientific validates the spiritual', as you shall see!

Our friends at Wikipedia state: "When a crystal of quartz is properly cut and mounted, it can be made to distort in an electric field by applying a voltage to an electrode near or on the crystal. This property is known as piezoelectricity. When the field is removed, the quartz will generate an electric field as it returns to its previous shape, and this can generate a voltage. The result is that a quartz crystal behaves like a circuit composed of an inductor, capacitor and resistor, with a precise resonant frequency. (See RLC circuit.)" AND: "A crystal oscillator is an electronic circuit that uses the mechanical resonance of a vibrating crystal of piezoelectric material to create an electrical signal with a very precise frequency. This frequency is commonly used to keep track of time (as in quartz wristwatches), to provide a stable clock signal for digital integrated circuits, and to stabilize frequencies for radio transmitters and receivers. The most common type of piezoelectric resonator used is the quartz crystal, so oscillator circuits designed around them were called "crystal oscillators".
Quartz crystals are manufactured for frequencies from a few tens of kilohertz to tens of megahertz. More than two billion (2×109) crystals are manufactured annually. Most are small devices for consumer devices such as wristwatches, clocks, radios, computers, and cellphones. Quartz crystals are also found inside test and measurement equipment, such as counters, signal generators, and oscilloscopes" I couldn't say any of this better and you can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_oscillator .The only point I am trying to make with these references is that crystals resonate and under the right conditions can 'manipulate things electrical'.

This said, consider this. The good old human body is nothing more than (albeit an exquisitely intelligent design of our Divine Creator--accident of amino acid soup and lightning, my FOOT!) a big old bag of bioelectrically charged water with a handful of biochemicals thrown in! Our physiology is very much affected by, run by, giving off and resonating with electrical energy. On a 'good day' when I am strong with healing-energy-to-spare, thanks be to God, I can make the skin on your arm 'buzz'. This is nothing extraordinary, actually, for with practice and concentration anyone can do this. Yes, it is a fascinating phenomenon.

Will it surprise you to learn that just as quartz crystals used in electronics can modulate a circuit, humans can use crystals and their own energies to modulate the circuits of the human body? No? Good, because now you're convinced of but one use of crystals and we are on to a second one.

Mineralogists have known for centuries that in the science of crystallography, 'the rule of constancy' applies to crystal geometry from gross specimens down to very smallest of samples. In the modern age, this has included the molecular and atomic levels as revealed by advance x-ray radiocrystallographic equipment. What this means, by way of example, is that the little cubic structure of table salt is reflected in large chunks of natural halite, the salt in our shakers and x-ray diffraction 'patterns' reflect the same cubic structure on a much smaller scale. This is a useful trait, indeed, for the study of not only mineralogy, gemology, geology, and the like, but also for biochemistry. I will explain why in view of this most exciting recent scientific report on HIV research!

The link below details research into an enzyme (a 'catalyst'-like small bit of protein) which allows the HIV virus to 'invade and take over' the nuclear material of host human cells. Scientists believe that if this enzyme known as "integrase" can be interfered with in some way, perhaps the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) will not be able to infect humans anymore! Indeed, there are pharmaceutical drugs in use today that do just that--they interfere with integrase and are somewhat effective. But just HOW these drugs work has been a secret, partly because the complete STRUCTURE of integrase has hitherto been unknown.

Somehow, researchers needed to determine the complete structure of, in crystalline form, the integrase molecule. A note here: enzymes are often 'freeze-dried' in tiny amounts and the crystalline form can either be in an amorphous (free) form or a more structured, crystalline form. You might think of sea salt 'as is' versus crystallized sea salt, for a loose analogy.

Here below is an excerpt of from newly published results of the structure of integrase based on crystal studies:
"Over the course of four years, the researchers carried out over 40,000 trials, out of which they were able to grow just seven kinds of crystals. Only one of these was of sufficient quality to allow determination of the three-dimensional structure.Dr Peter Cherepanov, the lead author of the study from the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London, said: "It is a truly amazing story. When we started out, we knew that the project was very difficult, and that many tricks had already been tried and given up by others long ago. Therefore, we went back to square one and started by looking for a better model of HIV integrase, which could be more amenable for crystallization. Despite initially painstakingly slow progress and very many failed attempts, we did not give up and our effort was finally rewarded."
In the case of the integrase, the process of crystallization was a MEANS TO AN END to determining the structure of an intimidating molecule. The researchers realized that if they could sequentially 'crystallize' bits of the enzyme and put these bits together in order to get a 'whole crystal' of the enzyme, they could visualize the thing by modern x-ray microscopy...The true STRUCTURE of the molecule has been deduced. And now that it is, newer and better ways to destroy/interrupt/block the enzyme can be found. The hope then is to make existing pharmaceuticals more effective and to come up with more pharmaceuticals for HIV positive patients in need.

Whether they are believers or not, I wonder if they are doing God's work here on earth to the extent that they may further reduce human suffering? Only the Almighty knows and all I can do is pray--and I ask that you join me-- that Dr.CHEREPANOV and COLLEGUES realize the important significance of their undertakings. Heaven forbid their knowledge be used for harm. 'May they walk in faith with discernment as they walk the halls of their laboratories'. May it be so. AMEN.
