Dear Ones:

     A large preliminary magnitude 6.8 earthquake has occurred in the PERU-BRAZIL BORDER REGION.

     This is noteworthy given that the longitude of this earthquake is roughly 'in line with' the Virginia earthquakes...not that they are necessarily related.

     The fact is, seismologists do not know if this is significant. 

     Unfortunately, there is no such thing as 'accurately PREDICTING' earthquakes, so I present this to you merely as an item of interest.

Dear Ones:

     We have experienced an earthquake and may or may not experience more in the form of 'after-shocks' which can be every bit as bad-or even worse-than the original.
     Even as we speak, seismologists at the USGS and elsewhere are still 'fine-tuning' the exact data for the original quake.  In fact, it has been downgraded by the USGS to a 5.8 mag, and at a depth greater than the original one km (0.62 mi).

     I urge one and all to not panic.  Use common sense and listen to public officials for safety information.
     And be sure to click on keyword 'tutorials' for a crash-course on how to understand earthquakes and find useful links for you and your loved one.

     Most of all, take comfort in these words of Scripture.  I quote here the NIV for Protestants and the KJV for Catholic and Orthodox readers, as representative 'versions'.

     Of course, the Word of God is Universal...and so the message is the same in all versions of Holy Scripture.     

     Earthquakes in The New Testament figure prominently in Matthew 24 (meaning 'verse' 24), Luke 21 and Mark 13.  I urge you to read them in their totality yourselves.

      We will start with Matthew 24:6-8.  Jesus is speaking:

 "6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains."

     Interestingly, in the King James Version of the Bible, we read:"and there shall be famines and pestilences and earthquakes in divers places" Mt 24:7 (KJV)
     Back to the NIV translation, Luke 21 reads: "There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven." Luke 21:10-11 (NIV)
     Back to the NIV translation, Mark 13 reads: "8Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.  There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains." Mark 13:8 (NIV)

     The corresponding verse in the KJV reads: "...and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows." Mark 13:8

     Oh, my.  And here we 'arrogant humans' like to think we can 'second-guess' the Great Designer when it comes to things of 'global proportion'!
     In fact, our 'arrogance' is one of the reasons that some 'fatuous' global-warming theories...that is, that man, himself, is capable of causing massive glacier melt and the like all by his lonesome...are so patently absurd.
     And even more absurd is the liberal Greenie allegation that MANKIND is responsible for the Japan earthquake!
     AS IF!
     But back to this surprise article:

Dear Ones:
      When it comes to 'predicting things about the world', humans are as accurate as believers can be when it comes to predicting the 'timeline' regarding 'end times'--meaning not very.
      Still, we like to think we can 'know'.
      But the Lord tells us very explicitly:
The Demand for a Sign
1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a] 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.      The passage above would tell us that while humans can glean the weather from various indicators, we are not to presume to understand God's 'Timeline' for us, plain and simple.
     So let's stick here with what we have been blessed to reasonably understand from 'observation, data collection, analysis and interpretation', i.e. from 'science'...and let God 'speak to our hearts' on other matters!
     The sun has been undergoing a week of instability.  In fact, it is unusually 'active' and the energy thrown off by the sun is currently, meaning 'now', affecting the earth in profound ways.
     These profound ways include the possibilities of severe weather with winds, rain, hail, tornadoes, lightning, thunder, mudslides, wildfires and the like.
     The sun in it's instability is also generating a great deal of 'magnetic field energy' which manifests itself on and in the earth, as well as in 'space'.

     Those of you who have been following along with my 'Tutorials' (click on this keyword below) realize that a solar situation such as this is a sure set-up for unstable earth weather.

     And, unfortunately for those places like ARKANSAS which has been experiencing a great number of earthquakes recently, this is a time to be vigilant.

     In OHIO and other 'flood areas', Geomagnetic storms only make matters worse.

     Note that at this time as this is being published, the arrow indicating the direction this energy is 'taking' is currently directed towards the Northeast of the United States.

     Shortly, it will be directed towards OHIO, thus intensifying whatever severe weather and geophysical events are occurring there.

     I urge those in 'danger areas' to be aware of the dynamics in play here.   Please get yourselves and your loved ones to safety, as needed.

     Unfortunately, your local public safety officials will not necessarily be forthcoming with the information I am presenting here, if they have any access to it at all.

     Also, there is a large group of 'thinkers' who do not yet recognize the correlation between GEOMAGNETIC STORMS, such as the one we are experiencing the effects of today, and 'everyday' earth weather and geophysical disturbances.

     OHIO and ARKANSAS today in the U.S.A. should pay heed, as well as those all over the globe in problem areas.

Dear Ones:
     Yes, there have been an inordinate number of recognizable and 'noticeable' earthquakes in Arkansas over the last 24 hours or so.
     Yesterday I wrote about a Geomagnetic Storm expected to be here Feb 17-19.  As I have described many times before, seismic activity is correlated to 'space weather'. 
     Simply put, the 'energy' in its various forms which is hitting the earth from the sun manifests here in the form of severe weather (severe storms) with the potential for tornadoes, lightning, thunder, flooding, tsunamis, volcanic activity, seismic activity and more.
     This collection of events is collectively known as 'Geomagnetic Storms', more or less, depending upon who is doing the 'defining'--a meterologist or an astrophysicist, that is.
     Still, it's actually all the same as far as we are concerned.
     Recently, the sun erupted with a rare 'X-Class' solar flare, with two attendant CME's (Coronal Mass Ejections).

     In terms of electrical phenomena, we see 'auroras' ('Northern Lights') at lower latitudes and can experience electrical, power grid and voltage fluctuations.
     Satellite functioning and transmission can be interrupted or terminated temporarily.
     Radio transmissions can be disrupted and the earth can be subjected to 'waves' of all sorts of ionizing radiation.
     Communication can be severely disrupted.
     In a 'nutshell', energy from a set of recent solar events, including the 'x-class flare' and CME's disturb the earth's magnetic field, resulting in affecting seismic activity to one degree or another.
     THIS is why Arkansas is acting up.

     You will note that while the magnitudes are relatively small, they are also relatively 'shallow'. 
     As a rule, 'the shallower the quake, the more it is felt at the surface', even with a lower-magnitude earthquake.

"February 16, 2011 -- The calm before the storm. Three CMEs are enroute, all a part of the Radio Blackout events on February 13, 14, and 15 (UTC). The last of the three seems to be the fastest and may catch both of the forerunners about mid to late day tomorrow, February 17. Watch this space for updates on the impending -- G2, possibly periods of G3 -- geomagnetic storming.

Dear Ones:
     This is not intended to scare you, but recently the sun erupted with a very large, powerful 'Class X' solar flare.  As I write and you read this, energy from the sun is hurling towards earth...Energy which will precipitate what is known as a 'Geomagnetic Storm'.
     NOAA's scale for  Geomagnetic Storms can be found here: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/NOAAscales/index.html 
     Do you see that green bar on the graph above?  That indicates that the expected date of the 'storm's' arrival is somewhere around Feb 18-20.
     I say, be aware of the possibility of sooner activity on earth starting now and take care if you live in 'danger areas' prone to earthquakes, flooding, volcanic activity and the like.
     (It is just my opinion that NOAA and NASA's timing predictions are often a little late, for what it's worth.)
     I pray not much comes of this, but we are currently in a period of 'Solar Minimum' which means that solar activity is (theoretically) fewer and far between, but more intense when the sun DOES act up.

     All Geomagnetic storms are not considered equal, because different kinds of energy can manifest in different storms or even within the same storm at different or the same time.

     To illustrate this, look at the graph below which is a graph of the 'Planetary K Index' (the Kp Index), which is an index by which geomagnetic storms are measured.

     The above graph is also correlated to 'aurora activity' in the northern hemisphere.  The rule is, generally, the higher the Kp index, the more brilliant the auroras sighted.

     'The Observed Hemispheric Auroral Power Input' is the 1-10 scale on which auroral power input (i.e. the energy hitting the earth from the sun) is measured.

     A quick examination of the 'Warnings' Chart on the top of this page reveals that we are to expect a Geomagnetic Storm on earth with potentially many or ALL the types of energy known to emanate from the sun, which can impact earth.

     This includes ionizing radiation such as x-rays, gamma rays, UV rays....as well as radio waves, electrical energy plus proton energy which we will take a look at below.

     Now, this 'proton flux' elevation is not good.  In fact, since I've started my Tutorials here (click on index keyword 'Tutorials' at the bottom of this article), I haven't seen a fluctuation such as this.

     (But then again, I don't follow space weather for a living, but only discuss it when it has Biblical  relevence, when there are safety concerns for the people of the world and when scientific curiosity piques my interest.)

      The bottom-line is that the expected Geomagnetic Storm will produce severe weather events and likely earth-based movements, eruptions and disruptions.

     According to our friends at NOAA, once again:

     There could be radio black-outs, radiation showers, unstable weather with tornadoes and, as I've discussed in my Tutorials, attendant earthquakes and the like.
     It is not routinely discussed for some reason, but Geomagnetic Storms affect the earth's magnetic field.  THIS is what prompts seismic, volcanic and other 'inner earth-related' movement, often with powerful effect, in case you didn't realize this, along with severe weather.

     As I said, there's no need to panic, but do check these links and here for further updates.
     Of course, our 'measuring, warning and communication' systems are dependent upon satellites, but solar energy (see proton map) can 'knock out', block, or 'black-out' satellites and their signals.
     So, as ever, real-time observations by trained meteorologists, astronomers, and nerds of all sorts will be as necessary as ever.

Dear Ones:
     Recently there has been a great deal of 'space weather' (solar activity, more specifically) which is affecting the earth.  The energy from the sun 'affects' us in the form of earthquakes, among other things, and a preliminary magnitude earthquake of 7.5 has hit Indonesia.
     Given that the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) has determined a 'depth' of 14.2 km, this is a quake which could produce tsunami problems.  In general, the 'shallower the quake', the worse the surface damage.

     There have also been powerful tornados and storms in Texas today...not surprising when we look at a map of the Kp (planetary Kp index, that is) which is a reflection of the energy hitting the earth which manifests itself as a 'geomagnetic storm'.

You know what the above NOAA warnings chart means? It means you should look up at the sky tonight and tomorrow for a potential light show known as the 'aurora borealis' aka 'northern lights'.


There's been a massive CME (coronal mass ejection). This means that all the solar Tutorials I've tortured you with (if you played along) these many months have not been for naught. YOU will be able to astound your family and friends with your knowledge of a new solar 'age', a new 'solar cycle', if you will : )


You, dear students,  will be able to describe geomagnetic storms with the best of them!  For anyone who would like some refresher courses or to just be tortured by Rev. Barb's 'Tutorials' (list below and on right) for the FIRST TIME, just click on something and read away.


But quickly, so you can 'sound smart' when the kids start asking you what's going on. No, really. They'll especially be impressed when you tell them also to expect some significant seismic activity and show them how to see all of it recorded in 'real time'.

'Why D.C. Area Had An Earthquake & Predicting What's To Come: A Tutorial' By Reverend Barbara Sexton "The Biblical Biochemist-Where Science Meets the Cross"

Dear Ones:
     It is said that 'with hindsight, EVERYONE is brilliant'.  But I've been writing these Tutorials for a while now, correlating 'space weather' with what's happening here on terra firma...meaning 'earth'.  It's good to know that the international scientific community is now officially 'taking note' also and you can check it out by checking out the NASA link above.
     Some are surprised by this earthquake.  President Obama's foolish 'taunting' about the 'earth not moving under his feet' or something to that effect after the passing of the abyssmal 'Health Care Deform (sic!) Bill' ASIDE...this earthquake is not at all unexpected for those of us who study space weather.
     I'd like to explain a few things to you in an easy-to-understand manner pertaining to this D.C/MD area shaker.  For additional Tutorials like this, just look at my index on the right side of the page, but here are the salient points for now.  If you'd like to play 'amateur astro/solar physicist', just 'collect and monitor' the links I provide you with here.
     First, we have an earthquake map, below.

     We see that the Washington, D.C. area was recently hit with a rogue 'quake' of magnitude 3.6 (see map above--the little 'blue square' )  The epicenter was in Maryland and the specifics per the USGS are:

     Long time readers here know that the USGS is the United States Geological Service.  As in my Tutorials, I've lined out how clearly 'SPACE Weather' is correlated with events on earth, including earthquakes, volcanic eruption, severe weather, and so forth.  
     So let's look at the 'weather picture' just prior to this Gaithersburg, MD earthquake.  Here is the Kp index graph which reflects energy hitting the earth from the sun.  Please note that there is a slight 'delay' (anywhere from 2-4 days, generally, if that) between the time the sun throws off it's energy and the time it hits earth and affects something or other.

Next, let's look at the 'solar wind' graph which is reflective of the force with which energy from the sun is being 'thrown off':

Next, let us take a look at recent 'warnings and alerts' about space weather:

     Finally, you can see all sorts of beautiful photos of 'solar flares' if you'd like to witness the beauty of the sun's energy being thrown off.  Those of you in Northern areas will see 'Auroras', which in the field are quantified by numbers <1-10 and are described in terms of 'Auroral Oval Input Power'.  This refers to the 'oval' of solar energy over and in the earth's atmosphere.  More solar flares=more auroras=more solar energy in the form of x-rays, electrons, protons, radio waves, etc hitting and affecting earth.

    One last note, my dear readers.  I really don't 'need' to know all this science and make predictions, for I read and believe the Bible which says:

"4Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,[a]' and will deceive many. 6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains."  Matthew 24:4-8

     And Scripture says there will be 'pestilences', too.  But I know that many of you are agnostics/atheists and I can relate to that, for I was one, too, for the first 37 years of my life.  I understand 'believing only in science'...but at this point I am content to trust in God, so I don't get too wound up about things.

     Still..the 'scientist' in me can't resist reviewing and analyzing 'data', but that's just me.  While I never pretend to be able to 'predict' the will of God for all of us on earth, I can't help but marvel at the wonderment of His universe and at the miracle that is 'us'.

     If only we listen to that 'small, still BOOMING VOICE' in our hearts, minds and souls, we should do alright.
