Dear Ones:

     Please pray with me just now for all who suffer from liver problems all over the world.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, we know that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Your 'design' of us...and your designs for us are a neverending source of wonder and, at times, confusion and anxiety.

Please help us to best understand your Will for us, that we might learn to deal with whatever afflictions we may have.

We know illness strikes young and old, alike...sometimes in what seems like 'out of the blue'...and sometimes as a result of our own 'foolishness'.

Yet, still, you are with us O Lord with your steadfast love.

You are there with us at all times with a love that refreshes itself continually,

Just as the very cells of the human liver refresh and replace themselves continually, 

So great is your 'Grand Design'.

And as we need only the smallest bit of love to carry on, 

So it is with the amazing liver....the smallest bit 'transplanted', even 'one-quarter'...can help us to continue on and give a grateful recipient a full life, once again.

You ever cleanse us, Lord, with your Love and Hope and Faith,

And you have provided our 'temporary vessels' with an organ of cleansing, as well.

So now we pray fervently for all who suffer from any and all diseases and illnesses of the liver that they be uplifted right now and unafraid.

For we understand that nothing is impossible with our Great Healer.

We are grateful, O God, that you take the time to listen to this our humble prayer of ours.

As we pray these things in our individual traditions, which for Christians is

Dear Ones:
     On this first day of Lent, I received this urgent PRAYER REQUEST.  (Note: Jessica is Lisa Prizio's niece) 

Dear Friends

John & Cindy Maranelli's daughter Jessica was rushed to Columbia Children's

Hospital tonight. The Doctors there determined her liver has stopped functioning.

She will need a liver transplant ASAP to survive. Please pray for God's will to be done.

Please pray that through this pain God's Glory will be revealed to all. Please pray our

Lord will spare her life and heal her body.

Thank you in advance for all your urgently needed prayers.

Lord God, we enter this Lenten Season and we remember Jesus's forty days in the wilderness.

We are in our 'own' wilderness now and we come to you with prayers for your child Jessica Maranelli and her parents John and Cindy and their friends and family.

Please have mercy on them, dear Father.

Please heal this teen with the gift of life and end her suffering.

We pray that she may live a complete and happy life, doing all good works in your Name.

We pray that she may be as a 'living testimony' to your Goodness and Faithfulness, even as we realize that short of a miracle, a gift for Jessica can only result from the loss of the earthly life of another.

To that end, we pray not solely for the Maranellis, but also for the 'donor family' we may yet meet and thank for their incredible love in the face of incredible loss.

Today we 'fear' when we should not, and we are 'tempted' in our weakness at this time and so we pray actually for 'that miracle cure', if it be Your Will, so that none must lose their earthly lives.

Absent your sudden Intervention this way, we are content to know that Jessica and all those who suffer acutely need only know the Promise you assure us of when we are 'transplanted' to Eternal Life...

In that Life we are free of all sadness and pain, after lives well-lived here and lessons learned through our Creator,

When our 'work here' is completed, we look forward to an Eternal Life reunited with our loved ones, fully restored to a 'perfect health', thanks to You alone...

And we thank you for the Promises you make to us, dear Lord.

We are faithful and we love you for them, even as we ask you to bless Jessica's doctors, surgeons and health care advisers in all their endeavors to save her life.

We pray these things in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit

Dear Ones:
     Please pay attention to any and all recalls pertaining to 'Salmonella' contamination of food and food products.
     This hazard is worsening in our food supply.  It started primarily in the egg and poultry industry years ago and has grown exponentially.
     Almost no food product is exempt from potential Salmonella contamination.  Fruits, vegetables and here peanuts (technically a 'legume') as well...and peanut butter.
     I cannot say that I am a major fan of peanut butter, even though it is a nutrient dense food source which many think tastes wonderful.
     Unfortunately, I have observed that peanut and peanut butter allergies are on the rise and are amongst the most 'deadly' of potential allergies one can have.
     Also, there is a direct link between excessive peanut butter consumption (that means daily consumption, or close to it) and development of pancreatic cancer (and liver cancer as well globally). 
     In fact, peanut farm 'workers' and their family members are among the 'hardest hit' when it comes to contracting and suffering from pancreatic cancer which is 'rapidly fatal'. 
     The tragic death of Billy Carter, past President Jimmy Carter's brother, brought the peanut-pancreatic cancer connection to the public's attention.  The Carters were 'peanut-farmers'.
"But in 1988, at the age of 51, he (Billy Carter) succumbed to the same pancreatic cancer which killed his father, his mother, and eventually his two sisters."

      Peanuts are often found to contain 'aflatoxins'.  These alflatoxins are produced by common molds: Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus.

     But the truth is that given the ubiquitous nature of molds and aflatoxin, the truth is that the American  consumer is pretty much on their own when it comes to assuring food safety for themselves and their loved ones.

     The best one can 'do' is to be sure to shop for peanut butter brands which actually address the issue of bacterial and chemical contamination and then pay the extra amount for 'the better organic brand'.
     As importantly, rotate 'safe' brands, buy smaller amounts and for Heaven's sake do NOT feed your child peanut butter every day if you wish to lessen the chance of them succumbing to any food-related ailments.
     With this latest combination of potential Salmonella contamination as well as the ever-present possibility of aflatoxin presence, please be careful with what you eat.

Unilever Announces Recall of Skippy® Reduced Fat Peanut Butter Spread Due to Possible Health Risk Limited Recall of 6 Best-If-Used-By Dates

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - March 4, 2011 - Unilever United States, Inc. today announced a limited recall of Skippy® Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread and Skippy® Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread, because it may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). No other Skippy® products are affected by this recall.
The product was distributed to retail outlets in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.
The affected product, which is packaged in 16.3 oz plastic jars, is as follows:
UPCs: 048001006812 and 048001006782 (located on the side of the jar’s label below the bar code.)
Best-If-Used-By Dates: MAY1612LR1, MAY1712LR1, MAY1812LR1, MAY1912LR1, MAY2012LR1 and MAY2112LR1 (Stamped on the lid of the jar.)
To date, no illnesses related to this issue have been reported.
The recall was initiated as the result of a routine sampling program by the company, which revealed that these finished products may contain the bacteria.
Consumers who have purchased Skippy® Reduced Fat Peanut Butter Spread with the above UPCs and Best-If-Used-By-Dates are urged to discard the product immediately and call the company for a replacement coupon. Consumers can contact the company at 1-800-453-3432, which is operational 24 hours a day, for information on the recall. In addition, a consumer services representative is available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM and 6:00 PM EST.

     "Well...I never liked them anyway."  This is what some of you have heard me say time and time again over the years.  I'm referring to Tylenol and Zyrtec.  Motrin (Ibuprofen) and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are a little better, but these ALL have to go for now. My comments and suggestions are in red.

     But first, here's the DRUG LIST of the recalled products.  DO NOT USE THEM!  Tylenol is also known as acetaminophen, paracetamol and N-acetyl-p-aminophenol (APAP).  I never promote the use of this drug, for it is too toxic.
     Tylenol for infants and children is so very toxic to young livers and to older ones, too, especially in those who drink alcohol.
     The official toxic dose for adults is 4,000 mg, and less for those who imbibe or have other predisposing factors.
     In children, the toxic dose which will destroy the liver is so low that even one overdose can kill.  Consult your doctor or health care provider for specific advice.
     Tylenol destroys the liver by depleting it's glutathione stores to the point that the liver dies.  Fortunately, for adults, I can recommend the use of glutathione-restoring NAC, N-Acetyl-Cysteine to protect your liver.  If you use Tylenol products and/or enjoy cocktail hour, take one 600 mg capsule of NAC before bedtime each night.  I will discuss using NAC for other liver conditions such as cirrhosis and hepatitis another time.  Consult your pediatrician or other health care professional for use of NAC in children under 12.
     The other natural supplement to use if you take Tylenol and/or enjoy cocktail hour is Milk Thistle extract.  Take one-three doses per day for serious liver disease in adults, either the liquid extract as directed on the label or one-three capsules of Milk Thistle extract (70 mg per cap) per day.  Consult your pediatrician or health care provider for the pediatric doses.

Some of the products included in the recall may contain a higher concentration of active ingredient (greatly increasing the threat of overdose!) than is specified; others may contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements; (And Lord knows what this means.  McNeil need to disclose more) and others may contain tiny particles.  (Again, this is anybody's guess) While the potential for serious medical events is remote, (WRONG!  Given the frequency of Tylenol overdose in children and the high toxicity of this drug, as a Biochemist I completely disagree with this assertion.  And, I would like to know what the 'extra inactive ingredients' mentioned here are and what are those 'particles' the FDA mentions in its Recall Notice?) the company advises consumers who have purchased these recalled products to discontinue use.
The company is conducting a comprehensive quality assessment across its manufacturing operations and has identified corrective actions that will be implemented before new manufacturing is initiated at the plant where the recalled products were made.

Parents and caregivers who are not sure about alternative pediatric health treatment options should talk to their doctor or pharmacist and are reminded to never give drug products to infants and children that are not intended for those age groups as this could result in serious harm.

     As I stated already, I have a problem with some of these drugs.  Let's say you give your allergic child the antihistamine Benadryl (diphenhydramine).   And let's say this child is, say hyperactive or has ADHD or has food allergies or is hypoglycemic or diabetic or just has a sensitive constitution.  Giving that child artificial flavorings and colorings alone can defeat the so-called antihistamine activity of Benadryl....and can even make any allergic reaction WORSE.  So far, not many medical doctors realize or acknowledge this, and as parents the responsibility rests with you to keep your children protected.
