FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday, May 23, 2011 SoldierSocks Receives Presidential Volunteer Service Award & Prepares for Packing Party Saturday, May 28th STAMFORD - Monday, SoldierSocks founder Christopher Meek of Stamford announced that the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation (the Council) awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award to SoldierSocks recognizing and honoring their "sustained commitment to civic participation, and inspiring others to make service a central part of their lives." "Since our first shipment in July 2009, SoldierSocks has sent 30,000 pounds of tube socks, baby wipes and other necessities to soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Meek. "While we are honored to be recognized by the Council, the real honor comes from serving the men and women fighting for our country each day" "We have a tremendous group of dedicated volunteers and sponsors who have helped us succeed in our mission to deliver the bare necessities to the men and women serving in harm's way," said Meek. "I hope receiving this award will help us raise awareness and get more people involved." SoldierSocks is a non-for-profit organization based in Stamford, Connecticut with the intent to obtain and distribute hygienic items for our soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. SoldierSocks.com is partnered with New Balance (New Canaan), Hope Street Pharmacy (Stamford), UPS Store (Norwalk) and works with the Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 49 and Air National Guard out of Stewart Air National Guard Base. in Newburgh, New York. Since receiving the first letter, SoldierSocks has helped deliver over 30,000 pounds of basic personal hygienic supplies to nearly 40 units, many of which have sons and daughters of CT serving, in Iraq and Afghanistan and has held supply drives everywhere from Boston, Miami, Hollywood and Iowa.
