E. coli http://www.foodsafetynews.com/
Dear Readers:I would like to point out several things to you regarding the Freshway Foods romaine lettuce recall:
1) The bacteria in question for the affected lettuce is not E. coli O157. It is a E. coli O145.
2) The FDA is investigating a possible 'Arizona Connection' with this latest contaminated lettuce report.
3) The bacteria involved, E. coli O145 is rare and almost never tested for, and it is likely that there are many more ill than first thought. Here's are some links for you: http://www.marlerclark.com/freshway_ecoli_outbreak_Michigan_Ohio_NY/?gclid=CLKV0tvLwKECFR5rswodOhGF4w

None of the above facts are obvious to the consumer. Why and how can you be unless you are informed? Unless you're 'in the business', that's what I'm here for. I've studied pathogens, human and otherwise, for over forty years now. As such, I've been 'following' E. coli O157 and it's subspecies, ever since the initial bloody-diarrhea 1997 Burger King tragedies. http://www.cnn.com/US/9708/23/burger.king/index.html You remember that. E. coli is the main bacteria in our intestines. Did you know that we carry around about 5-7.5 POUNDS of bacteria (I'm not talking 'feces' here) in our colons at any given time? While a source of amusement to some, just think of what this means in the face of a rogue E. coli outbreak!
It broke my heart to witness several pediatric cases of E. coli O157:H7 in CT. Did you know that Burger King and others decided to actually treat their burger meat with toxic ammonia in an attempt to sanitize their meat? It's true. And the really pathetic part is that the ammonia-treatment does even work! http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ssf/2009/12/burger_chains_defend_using_amm.html
Now you know one other reason why I'm a non-meat-eater, the primary one being that the animal farming industry is utterly cruel, inhumane and heartless. (The exception being the 'free-range' meats providers and processors who get my 'okay', for they are proper stewards of the animals God gave us for food)...But back to LETTUCE now:
romaine lettuce http://www.foodsafetynews.com/
This romaine lettuce situation is not your 'run-of-the-mill food poisoning'. E. coli species are identified with animal and human feces and with water contaminated with it. They cause a hemorrhagic colitis that is life-threatening and should be avoided at all costs.Beware of produce from areas with poor sanitation, farm-worker unrest, immigrant unrest and so forth. It's becoming more obvious each day that there is no limit to the harm humans will cause when they are 'discontented' with something or other.
Fundamentalist Extremist TERRORISTS are known to study ways to 'poison America' through our food supply, so be aware and be careful. I don't care if these TERRORISTS are FOREIGN or not, their intent is the same--to cause harm to human life. They mean to destroy the American way of life any way they can.
This said, don't expect that many will 'look out' for you. They won't. You must be vigilante yourself--for you and for your loved ones. I'm sorry if all this sounds 'paranoid' to you, but I am merely being pragmatic.

Either pay more for 'certified organic brands' or skip eating the produce in question. Since the FDA is investigating a possible 'ARIZONA CONNECTION' for this lettuce (LINK: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hEnc00D5YgQjLxbZqLLkjOw_fwzgD9FI3PRG0 there is a possibility that there is a deliberate fouling of the food supply underway.
Of course, it could just be good-old unacceptable levels of 'filth and poor sanitation'. I don't have a 'politically correct bone in my body'...with a 'thick-skin' to go with it...and I'm speaking plainly here.
Let the buyer beware and be wary in these days. There are people intent upon doing us harm, and there are those who don't care if they harm others through sheer indifference and negligence. That's how it is today.
God Bless and Keep You,

Contact: 1-888-361-7106
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 6, 2010 - Sidney, Ohio – Freshway Foods is voluntarily recalling products containing romaine lettuce with a use by date of May 12 or earlier because they have the potential to be contaminated with Escherichia coli O145 bacteria (E. coli O145). The products were sold under the Freshway brand and Imperial Sysco brand. The company is working with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to inform consumers of this recall.
This recall includes romaine lettuce products sold by Freshway Foods for food service outlets, wholesale, and in-store retail salad bars and delis; no other products are involved. Freshway Foods does not produce bulk, prepackaged romaine or bagged salad mixes containing romaine for sale in supermarkets, and therefore these products are not included in this recall.
E. coli O145 causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.
The recalled romaine lettuce products were sold to wholesalers and food service outlets in the following states east of the Mississippi river: Alabama, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The recalled romaine products were also sold for distribution to in-store salad bars and delis for Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets, and Marsh stores in the states listed.
