Dear Ones:I think this is of interest to you, but if not, just skip it. There are two things I would like to bring to your attention as you 'search for' and 'google' recent earthquake information. Here are my observations for you:
One of the sites I refer you to for it's great real-time, dynamically updated every 5 minutes data is http://www.iris.edu/seismon/ If you access that site regularly, you will notice that the original readings are on the 'high side' for quakes. Recently, the 7.2 quake was listed as just that, but has since been downgraded to 7.0. Often times, this site DISAGREES with the data presented by the US Geological Survey (USGS) at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php This USGS site often has the 'lower' mag designation finally settled upon....even when the press is still using the original and sometimes erroneous number(s).
What I am trying to say is this: access the first site and you are likely to get a higher reading than the second site. Usually both these sites come to an accord and with any help, the press media adjusts their reporting also. But for Joe and Jane Blow ("us", that is) it is a simple matter of noting the time, exact location and DEPTH of any quakes being reported and then you can take my advice and stick with the USGS readings, for they are the ones whose data will be used in the event that US Emergency Management has to to get involved in any way.
Per yesterday's Calif quake, from the first site (quakes 4.0 or greater-Iris Wilber System worldwide), you get:
04-APR-2010 22:40:45 32.19 -115.10 7.0 10.0 CALIF.-BAJA CALIF. BORDER REGION
For the USGS site (2.5 or greater US quakes and 4.5 or greater for the rest of the world), you get:
MAP 7.2 2010/04/04 22:40:41 32.128 -115.303 10.0 BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
You will notice very slight understandable variations in time. Usually the magnitude values are the same, but in the case of this "Press-Reported 7.2 Quake". you will note that it's been downgraded to magnitude 7.0 by the Iris Wilber System, the first site. Do not let this confuse you when trying to figure out the risk to you and your loved ones!
Just compare TIMES, latitudes/longitudes and DEPTHS! Remember what I told you about depths--the 'shallower the quake', the more likely it is to damage the surface and for this latest quake, the measured depth is 10.0 km for all systems of measurement.
Deep quakes can wreck havoc with undersea volcanos, tectonic plate dynamics, etc, but for most land issues, the above depth argument holds. Constuction methods have everything to do with the sturdiness of all structures in earthquake areas, as well we know by now.
Finally, you may have heard me plead with astrophysicists and seismologists in the cypersphere to COME FORWARD and CORRELATE things for people and to even, God forbid, ALERT US in very real and useful ways! So far, I find but one 'scientist' who is willing to go out on a limb, but even he his data is often insufficient and too far 'after the fact'. The sad truth is that government officials keep everyone clammed up so that no one panics...presumably. As usual, 'we, the public' are too dumb to handle any truthful information that may come our way from scientific experts speaking on behalf of the government.
What else is new?
In view of this, we need to keep our own counsel and do our own due diligence with figuring out what's going on. Look--you'd better believe that government officials will take care of themselves and theirs' and that includes the NASA and USGS scientists. We little people will be left on our own and we'd do best to realize that now. Even as a first responder, I know that I am expendable and willingly accept it.
In the event of a major biochemical hazmat event, for instance, after I make sure that my family and other loved ones are as safe as can be, I will leave to help the community. If you've ever seen the movie "Quarantine" you get a pretty good idea of what happens to 'first-responders' who have 'been exposed'. Just look at what is happening to 9/11 first responders, two and a half waves of whom I've been involved with pastoral-counseling-wise. Just look at the 9/11-related medical aftermath everyone has to contend with!
The same confusion, lack of information, dysinformation and dearth of assistance will transpire when the 'Big One' hits the California/West Coast area and we'd best realize and accept that fact now.
The 'prize' will go to those who can manage to maintain their 'humanity' in God's eyes, while trying to survive as best as we can. I say of the Bible, "We've read The Book and now watch The Movie". If you haven't read that 'Book' lately or ever, now sure is a good time to pick it up and see what it has to say. Prepare to be amazed!
Praying for you in Christ,
Reverend Barbara Sexton
