City of Stamford Announces Second H1N1 Flu Vaccination Clinic for High Risk Population
STAMFORD, CT - November 13, 2009
The Stamford Department of Health and Social Services will hold their second H1N1 walk-in vaccination clinic in partnership with Stamford Hospital; The H1N1 walk-in vaccination clinic for Mass Dispensing Area 2 (Stamford & Darien) will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Tully Health Center (32 Strawberry Hill Ct.), offering injectable H1N1 vaccination to pregnant women, children 6 months to 35 months, and children 36 months to 6 years of age with underlying medical conditions, such as asthma, ONLY. No appointments necessary.
Remember that the injectable form of the H1N1 vaccination is the one with the thimerosal (mercury preservative). My advice considering that this H1N1 (Swine) Flu is an official Pandemic per the CDC and WHO, is that this nominal amount of mercury in the vaccine should NOT deter pregnant women, parents and other high risk patients from getting the vaccine if they choose to do so. Please seek the advice of your doctor for your particular situation and then use your common sense.
Due to limited supplies of H1N1 vaccine, the Stamford Department of Health and Social Services is following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on vaccinating high risk groups at this time. We will continue to distribute H1N1 vaccine to high risk individuals as vaccine is in limited supply. As more vaccine becomes available, we will expand the clinics to include more target groups in the community.
Again...I repeat...the usual 'flu rules' are not applying this flu season. Healthy Seniors are NOT being given the priority they are usually given. Why? Because it is believed...and has been borne out to date, that most people over age 65 have substantial immunity to the H1N1 Influenza variant. This is good news. And, as soon as all high-risk persons are vaccinated for this unusual flu, Seniors will also be offered the vaccination if they desire it.
The Department continues to accept appointments for the live-attenuated H1N1 spray vaccine for healthy children ages 2 to 18 and healthy, non-pregnant household contacts, or care givers of infants younger than 6 months in the community. Appointments can be made by calling the Stamford Department of Health & Social Services H1N1 vaccine scheduling line (203-977-6172).
You can get the nasal spray vaccine by calling the Stamford Health Dept at 1-203-977-6172 and making an appointment. This is for healthy persons only (see above for specifics) and involves a live-weakened vaccine which does NOT contain any thimerosal (mercury) preservative.
Please continue to check the City of Stamford website (www.cityofstamford.org) and the Stamford Department of Health and Social Services H1N1 Hotline (977-4213) for H1N1 clinic updates.
Check http://www.cityofstamford.org/ and the Stamford Health Dept HOTLINE 1-203-977-4213 regularly to see where and when vaccination clinics are popping up. I will try to keep current here, too: http://www.dearoneshealingministry.blogspot.com/
