Dear Ones:

     It's not 'fun' and it's not 'popular'.  But here I am to tell you about 'Rare Disease Day 29 February 2012'.

     Yes, this is the day where 'the powers that be' turn their attentions to 'orphan' diseases...and to those conditions which can make life miserable, but which affect only the 'few' and thus receive scant attention:

     This is a 'global effort', as it should be for the kind of things that affect ALL humans, regardless of where they happen to be on the globe.
     Can there be any doubt that ALL peoples of 'good faith' wish nothing but the 'best' and 'the best of care' for those in need?
     Certainly not!

     So, if you are suffering from (or are the love one of) a 'rare disease', you are keenly aware of what this 'leap year day' of February 29, 2012 means.

     It means that you are not forgotten.  It means that you can rest assured there are those who care.  You can know that there definitely ARE researchers and others who have your interests at heart.

     And, most of all, it means you have HOPE for a cure, and if not cure, for a treatment..and if not a treatment, then the hope of a 'prevention'.

     In this spirit of communal compassion, I ask that each of you reading this takes the time to realize that, truly, 'there but for the grace of God, go each of ourselves and our loved ones'.

     Today is a day to appreciate the gains of modern science, while understanding and being grateful for our Creator who loves us so much.

     God made us His magnificent creation!  Let us remember--today and all days--to never take His gift of life to us for granted.

     And never let us forget that, as Christians, when we pray in the powerful name of Jesus Christ...

     ALL things are possible!

Dear Ones:

     There are a number of health concerns that the "OCCUPY" protesters, their supporters/visitors/sight-seers, law enforcement, public health and all who have contact with their 'camps' and 'campers' should be aware of.
     You may want to read my article series on the risks of TSA 'pat-downs' at airports as a 'primer' of sorts, to get yourself acquainted with what one needs to be on the 'look-out' for in tight quarters, especially when there is person-to-person contact.

     As bad as the unsanitary conditions of TSA 'pat-down' areas are, the conditions "OCCUPY" campsights are infinitely worse.
    Essentially, what we have with these protesters is minimal and ineffective sanitation coupled with poor or non-existent medical care.
     "OCCUPY" areas are, in many cases, merely 'outdoor homeless shelters' run (for the most part) by those who may or may not have the professional training to do so...And who, even if they do have such training are, according to most news reports, woefully lacking in adequate supplies and back-up.
     "OCCUPY" encampments all over lack adequate sheltering materials, not to mention toilet facilities, heat and refrigeration.
     Most important of all, many of these "OCCUPY" camps lack the capability to address what even the BEST legitimate 'non-profit homeless shelters' have difficulty adequately handling, which is: mental illness, substance abuse and what is known as 'dual-diagnosis' (mental illness combined with substance abuse of some sort.)
     I offer here no remediation other than the obvious, but rather an impartial, apolitical list of 'things to consider' for my fellow human beings at this time in history.
     As a 'homeless advocate' for three decades, and as a health care professional well-versed in 'disaster and emergency preparedness' and 'epidemiology', I have a great understanding about what is necessary for the safe and sanitary administration of emergency housing for men, women and pregnant women and women and children.

     Let me state simply that "OCCUPY" protesters and others involved with persons involved in this movement, have a great number of sanitation, health, wellness and environmental concerns to contend with.
     There are 'human factors' (i.e. acts of violence/man-made disasters) and natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes and the like), as well.
     Who does "OCCUPY" call in the event of crimes of assault and rape?  Who will they 'turn to' if a storm strikes or a diarrheal disease breaks out in the camp?

     Many of the 'illnesses and diseases' listed below are reasonably easy to avoid and eradicate nowadays using simple methods of 'good hygiene', camp cleanliness...and impeccable professional medical care at the first sign of trouble.
     I'm not sure that "OCCUPY" camps can make the grade, even if and when everyone involved are brought into the mix for the 'betterment of all'.  Human nature just does not work that way and we will always have those who, for one reason or other, are 'marginalized'.
     What I see is that the "OCCUPY" 'tent cities' will likely go the way of most 'tent cities'.
      The cold-hard fact is that an 'urban OCCUPY protester' eating his or her 'designer poached salmon donation' with a working 'grey water' project at their feet will fare no better than a natural disaster victim across the world eating a WHO rations reconstituted with donated clean water.

     In fact, camp refugees overseas may well get superior medical and other care if relief workers can get to them and they accepts their offers.

     Oh, human pathogens are 'great equalizers' indeed.

     Diseases we used to 'be protected from' are quite mobile, thanks to jet travel.  Diseases, such as smallpox, once believed to be have been 'wiped out' due to worldwide immunization, may not have been...And "OCCUPY" campers must consider whether their close-quarters' 'neighbors' have or have not been immunized against certain pathogens.

     My best advice is this: don't rule anything in the following lists IN or OUT if you are feeling ill after having attended an "OCCUPY" event, and visit your health care professional IMMEDIATELY if something doesn't feel right.

     Parents: if you 'visit' an "OCCUPY" campsite or live in one, I beg you to consider the health and well-being of your children.

     Children, like the elderly and those who are immuno-compromised, are at greater risk when it comes to illness, disease and exposure to extremes of temperature, both heat and cold.

     For "OCCUPIERS" and others of all ages, here's your 'list' of things to watch out for.

     It's not necessarily 'fully inclusive' and will be updated as necessary.

1)  Used/exchanged clothing, bedding, sleeping bags, towels, wash-clothes, anything of cloth (especially when 'damp' or wet) can transmit:

• bed bugs
• lice ('crabs')-head/armpit/body/pubic areas
• fleas
• scabies (mites)
• ringworm (a fungus, not a 'worm'!)
• MRSA 'Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus' (a bad 'staph' skin infection)
• Molluscum contagiosum (a virus)
• molds of all types
• mildew
• roaches (potential hitch-hikers in anything made of cloth or paper)

2)  Used/Exchanged personal items, razors, utensils, plates, cups, shared childrens' toys, toothbrushes, 'surfaces', used and improperly disposed of bandages, dressings, tampons, sanitary pads, condoms, toilet paper, cigarette butts and all items contaminated with blood, semen, saliva, sputum, feces or any other bodily secretions have the potential to transmit:

• hepatitis B
• hepatitis C
• viral hemorrhagic fevers
• Salmonella
• E. coli
• HIV/AIDS
• influenza
• SARS
• bacterial infections

3)  Improperly cooked/handled/heated/stored/prepared food can transmit:

• Campylobacter
• Salmonella
• E. coli O157:H7
• Calicivirus or Norwalk-like virus
• Listeria
• Shigella
• Hepatitis
• Giardia lamblia
• Cryptosporidia
• Clostridium botulinum

4) Poor hygiene can encourage:

• vaginitis ('yeast infection')
• bacterial vaginitis ('vaginosis')
• toxic shock syndrome

• folliculitis (infection of the hair follicles)
• furuncles (boils)
• Necrotizing Fasciitis ('Flesh eating disease) due to Streptococcus pyogenes
• blepharitis (eyelid inflammation) complicated by bacterial infection
• warts
• flea infestation complications
• lice (head/body/pubic) complications
• scabies (mites)

5) Person-to-Person contact, especially when combined with poor hygiene, can transmit:

• gonorrhea
• syphilis
• vaginitis
• jock itch
• anal abscess
• scabies
• fleas
• lice
• furuncle (boil)
• carbuncle (group of furuncles)
• impetigo
• genital warts
• herpes
• viruses
• influenza
• bacteria

6)  Wounds, punctures, lacerations, abrasions improperly or not treated can cause:

• tetanus
• bacterial, viral, protozoan infections

7a)  Mice in camp can transmit:

• Salmonella
• Ratbite fever
• dermatitis
• Favus
• tapeworm
• Lyme disease
• Tularemia
• Leptospirosis
• Lymphocytic choriomeningitis
• Hantavirus
• Rickettsialpox

7b)  Rats in camp can transmit:

• rabies
• plague
• Salmonella
• Tularemia 
• rat bite fever (Streptobacillus moniliformis North America, Spirillum minus Asia)
• other infections (due to bites, droppings)

8)   Insects in camp can transmit:

• West Nile virus (mosquitoes)
• Eastern Equine virus (mosquitoes)
• Lyme's disease (ticks)
• Rocky Mountain spotted fever (ticks)
• malaria (mosquitoes)
• Tick-Borne Relapsing fever (ticks)
• MRSA (Brown recluse spider bites)
• dermatitis-like skin conditions-intense itching with and without secondary infections

9)  Contaminated water for drinking, bathing, recycling (when some gets into eyes/nose/body orifices/is accidentally swallowed, etc) can transmit:

• Amebiasis   
  
• Buruli Ulcer
• Campylobacter
• Cholera
• Cryptosporidiosis
• Cyclosporiasis
• Dracunculiasis (guinea-worm disease)
  
• Escherichia coli
• Fascioliasis
• Giardiasis

10)  Dogs, cats, other pets improperly vaccinated and cared for medically can transmit the following to humans, especially those living in close, unsanitary quarters:

• Bartonella ('Cat Scratch Disease')

• Giardia
• Leptospirosis (from dogs)
• Mange (rarely, from dogs)
• MRSA (dogs, cats)
• Plague (cats, dogs bitten by infected fleas)

• Sporotrichosis (dogs, cats--a fungus)

11)  Environmental factors can elicit"

• hypothermia/frostbite (cold)
• hyperthermia/heat stroke (heat)
• sunburn/burns/skin cancer (sun exposure)
• dehydration (heat, usually)
• electrolyte imbalance (heat and dehydration)
• trench foot (immersion in water, lack of sock change/foot hygiene)
• asthma/lung/'breathing' issues (dust, 'mites' in bedding & clothes, perfumes/oils, cleaning solutions, roach dropping inhalation, second hand smoke, candle smoke, incense)
• skin rashes/dermatitis (scabies ('mites'), molds, mildews due to rotted food, reused clothing/bedding, allergies to plastics used as 'tarps', etc, DEET allergies, scented baby wipes, perfume allergies, smoke allergies (facial rash usually, swelling), incense allergy (exposed skin 'itches'), second hand smoke, etc
• vaginitis (women be careful with different brands of sanitary products)
• hives (full body) ( something ingested or grossly exposed to-check for food allergies and be careful with 'donated' skin care products such as lotions, powders, sprays, make-up)
• anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction to something exposed to and/or ingested)

     It is very difficult to live with minimal creature comforts, especially when the weather (and other factors) are against you.

     Winter is coming and the flu season is here.  Cold is a 'stressor' which taxes the immune system, thereby weakening it.

     Having the 'flu' in an urban 'tent city' will be no picnic.

     Influenza readily turns into pneumonia when conditions are poor and a person is not receiving adequate food, rest and relief from the elements.

     Also, please note that 'strep throat' (due to Streptococcus bacteria) is extremely common and spreads like 'wildfire' in contained areas when food and water are shared...presenting as yet another thing for "OCCUPY" campers to be on the look-out for.

     A 'strep throat' can turn into life-threatening 'Scarlet Fever' very quickly, so if you have a sore throat and notice a head/neck/chest red rash, get medical help IMMEDIATELY.

     Remember that the 'fecal-oral' route is responsible for many bad 'infections' such as those caused by E. coli.

     So, as much as possible....wash, wash and wash again with soap and water after using the bathroom and whenever you can, all "OCCUPY" participants!

     Don't depend on 'hand gels' or 'baby wipes', alone, in lieu of showering.

     Also, when you use hand gels or (even better in my opinion70% isopropyl alcohol), do not wipe/shake-off the 'excess'.

     Let things 'air dry' for maximum effectiveness of these sanitizers.

    Anyone who has 'battled' breast health issues--patients, family and their friends--knows just how important the proper support is for one to achieve improved well-being after what can be a 'harrowing experience'.
     There can never be too much 'concern', caring, technical expertise, medical brilliance, scientific innovation, top-level diagnostic and surgical equipment, pre-diagnostic, pre-surgical, spiritual and pastoral counseling.
     We are grateful for all the 'rehabilitation' and 'wellness' services available to us...before, during and AFTER any breast health crisis!
     When we ladies walk into Stamford Hospital's 'Women's Breast Cancer' for whatever procedure our docs may order...it is impossible to convey just how much we appreciate the courteous and compassionate reception we receive there.
     It really 'matters' that someone cares.
     It really matters that someone informs our nervous husbands and children when we are 'running a little late' and why we are.
     It really matters that the staff at Stamford Hospital is always there for us and for those we care about, at a time when we feel so very vulnerable.
     Having 'battled' breast problems for the last 41 (forty-one years!), I can tell you that I've seen it all at many different facilities.  The 'service' at Stamford Hospital, for me, equals none and I will elaborate in future articles.
     Yes, I've sat with you in 'braless misery', waiting for my own name to be called at 'the Tully Center'--many times.
      In relative anonymity, I have felt both helpless and hopeless right along with you at times.
      And so I say, 'God Bless those who have devoted their lives to helping women and men who are diagnosed every year with some sort of breast malady'.
     They make a bad situation 'better' and we never forget them!
     May God Bless such as these and shine His Face upon them and upon all those who will be 'PAINTING THE TOWN PINK' this October 2011!

     In this series, I will be taking you through the process of preparing 'new pointe shoes' for use.

     First we'll sew on ribbons and then some elastics.  Many are curious about how this is actually done.

     Of course there is a vast difference between prepping a shoe for a photo shoot...and preparing one for  actual classes and performing.

     Here, I will try to cover both, so you can 'get the idea' of what goes on 'behind the scenes'.

     Truth be told, all related to 'delicate ballet pointe shoes' is, in reality, not exactly the beautiful fairy-land fantasy of pink satin and beautiful tutus we initially think about.

     Real pointe work is demanding.  

     And real pointe shoes are dirty, sweaty, stinky, twisted, bent, scuffed, creased, squished, cracked, 'shellacked', 'glued', rosined, discolored and anything BUT glamorous by the end of the day!

     And did I mention a ballerina's FEET?  

     These poor feet are likely to be blistered, swollen, callused, bloodied, aching, sore, bruised, mottled, lumpy, toenailess and/or with broken, black and blue nails, distorted, sweaty versions of their 'former selves'...which leads me to the obvious caveats here:

     PLEASE don't play with pointe shoes (on your feet, that is) just to 'see' if you can stand up in them!

     A single incident of wobble to one side or the other can result in permanent foot injury.  

     And there are a plethora of other injuries that those without proper shoe-fitting, strength and actual ballet lessons and training can easily fall prey to.

     So, enjoy these ballet photos and join me in appreciating the grueling years of practice, work and total dedication dancers commit to in order to create the illusion of being 'light as air' in the beauty of dance on stage.

     New ballerinas must have their pointe shoes properly chosen and fitted by professionals with the advice of their instructors, of course.

    And different ballet academies/companies will have different dance wear and shoe 'mandates', some being more 'traditional' than others.

     Even 'casual dancers'--who utilize dance as a form of exercise--can get injured over time, even with care taken.

     So, please, heed my advice here! 

     All wise dancers must allow for adequate 'healing time' while receiving proper medical care in the event of injury.  Please allow me to recommend 'Arnica gel', which should be applied as soon as possible after an injury has...or is suspected to have...occurred.

     Arnica gel is readily absorbed and dries non-greasy.  It should not be applied to open skin or areas which are abraded, but should be applied 'around such areas', as well as on aching joints and muscles.  

     Three to five applications per day should do it and once you try it, you won't go without it ever again.

     Some people think 'homeopathy' is 'mumbo-jumbo' medicine, but trust your Christian biochemist-herbalist/'Potions Master' here--IT WORKS!

     In fact, bruises can be prevented from forming if used immediately after an injury on unbroken skin.  

     And existing bruises can be resolved in up to 1/3 of the usual time with liberal use of topical arnica gel (a little revealed 'trick' used by some prominent plastic surgeons, btw).

     I also heartily recommend arnica spray or tablets orally, taken concurrently to the topical gel application.  Any major brand should suffice.

 Dear Ones:

     As of today, local Arizona news sources alert us that the U.S. Forest Service indicate that the smoke from the eastern Arizona fire Wallow Fire has spread as far east as New Jersey, New York City, southern Massachusetts and over the Atlantic Ocean.

     It's also moving into Mexico, New Orleans, Kansas and Florida and this will CONTINUE!

     I would urge all of you to stay inside with air-conditioning wherever possible.  Be sure to seek the advice of your personal health care advisor if you are in a smoke-filled area, as to how to 'proceed' while this smoke and fire event continues.

     It may be that the only 'safe' thing to do will be to move to a smoke-free area for the duration.

     Few have 'respirators', but in a pinch, N-95 (those 'hard' facial masks) masks may help...as will something as simple as a wet bandanna wrapped over the nose and mouth.

     Contact lens wearer, take care and maybe use your old 'specs', unless your eye health care provider says otherwise.  Use your common sense if smoke particles get 'caught' under a lens.

     Cotton stuffing in the nose can work in an emergency, if you are able to breathe only through your nose.

     Since this is an emergency situation for so many, my 'crash-course' on alternative care for ASTHMA-Smoke-induced or other- is as follows:

     For adults:  take one Solaray Brand Lobelia 50 mg capsule at the onset of an attack, up to 4 caps per day.  Lobelia can be taken when inhalers 'fail' or are unavailable.  It can also be taken as a 'adjunct asthma treatment' to supplement whatever pharmaceuticals a patient may be taking.

     If you prefer the stronger and faster liquid extract, I recommend lobelia liquid extract.

     My general rule for dosing in adults is 4-7 drops of either the vinegar or alcohol Lobelia extract.

     Many people think the vinegar extract 'tastes like salad dressing' and it can be taken alone right in the mouth, to stop an asthma attack in it's tracks!

BE SURE TO CHECK WITH YOUR PERSONAL HEALTH CARE PROVIDER BEFORE TAKING LOBELIA OR ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVE REGIMEN SUGGESTED HERE.

     (I pray that your physician has an extensive knowledge of herbs and is enlightened enough to be open-minded and to trust that you, the consumer, are capable of examining and are 'entitled to' ALL your options!)

     Since many 'lungs' have already been filled with smoke and soot, I am also recommending a rarely heard of herb called elecampane.  Herb Pharm has this in liquid extract form.  Unlike the pharmaceutical guaifenesin found in over-the-counter 'expectorant' formulas, elecampane actually WORKS as an expectorant.

     (Guaifenesin has been 'grandfathered-in', although it has never actually been proven to have the 'efficiency or efficacy' necessary were an NDA (new drug application) submitted for it today!  Note to pharmaceutical professionals: I welcome any data which challenges my assertion here.  Please  send mail to: BarbaraKSexton@aol.com )

       The dose for the elecampane is one dropperful every 6 hrs as needed, to be taken on a daily basis for no more than 10 days.

     I recommend that elecampane be given during waking hours, as you will want to 'work with' your body as you cough up whatever residue may be in your lungs.

     The third component of my 'smoke/asthma regimen' is the addition of liquid Echinacea Root extract at a dose of two dropperfuls every six hours.  

     Echinacea root extract may be taken for as long as six weeks at a time.  Consult your alternative health care provider for information on the proper way to 'cycle' dosing with this herbal immunostimulant/cleanser/remover of toxins.

     Place your liquid extracts TOGETHER in a little pure water, swirl and drink.

     For extra effect-especially with smoke-irritated throats-GARGLE with this mixture, then swallow, for the echinacea is a 'natural mouth and throat anesthetic'.  You will know you've got 'good extract' if your tongue 'tingles' a bit after you take echinacea.

     Write my suggestions here on an index card and carry them with you so that you will have this information with you at all times.

     And be sure to build your own 'natural alternative FIRST AID KIT'.

     Remember that in most emergencies, regular medical supplies will run out and you must be prepared to care for yourself and your loved ones (don't forget PETS) with whatever means you have on hand until you can get to your regular health care provider!

As crews start to get a handle on the Wallow Fire , smoke continues to pour across the U.S. continent.
The wildfire in eastern Arizona had burned through more than 408,000 acres as of Friday.
A map posted on the U.S. Forest Service website show smoke from the Wallow Fire has drifted through the Midwest as far east as New Jersey, New York City, the southern tip of Massachusetts and over the Atlantic Ocean.
The smoke is also moving south and southeast into Mexico and through the Gulf of Mexico, through New Orleans and into northwestern Florida.
The heaviest smoke is seen heading northeast into New Mexico and into southern Kansas; through several Midwest and around New Orleans.
The Wallow fire started May 29 and is believed to be human caused.

Dear Ones: 
     There are times in life where many of the usual rules no longer apply.
     And such is the case when cancer strikes.  
     C-a-n-c-e-r...this most feared of medical conditions, strikes the entire circle of loved ones of the person affected.
     Make no mistake; cancer is very much a family disease, sparing neither the very youngest, nor those rich in age.
     It likewise strikes the 'known', as well as the 'unknown', and the 'good', as well as the 'bad'...whatever that happens to mean.
     Of course the words I use here are mere human qualifiers, for who can tell who truly is GOOD or not so good, on any given day or at any given time?
     Indeed the best that humankind can truly expect to 'agree upon' are judgement calls where truly horrendous actions prevail whereupon most sentient human beings can agree that 'evil is afoot'.
     Through the ages, a singular theory has been floated that 'cancer is a punishment reserved for those who need chastening'.
     RUBBISH, I say, to that!  I do not believe that our Lord allows for such as this, especially in view of the fact that innocent babes contract cancer all the time.
     Consider also the concept of a 'cancer personality', meaning that a category of human exists which is particularly vulnerable to developing cancer.
     I've studied this theory for a life-time now and can say that if there is anything 'approaching' a bona fide 'cancer personality', it is one where stress rules and medical care neglect reigns in a person's life.
     These are qualifiers particularly difficult to discern second-hand, and, so, I am prone to debunk the theory of 'a cancer personality', as I do the concept of cancer being used as 'God's punishment'.
     But here are some things I DO know about cancer: 
     --A person's entire life changes when cancer is diagnosed, as does that of the patient's family.
     --Some prefer to share their saga publicly, while others do not.  It is a personal choice.  Just be aware that once a person's cancer is 'made public', there's no taking it back.
     --Once people 'know' of someone's cancer, everyone's reaction will change towards this person, be it family, friends, employers, employees, 'readers', fans and everyone else whose life has been touched by the cancer patient.  In some places, even today, a 'cancer diagnosis' is perceived to be a thing of shame.  This is borne of ignorance.
     --There may be some merit to keeping one's own counsel when it comes to sharing one's cancer diagnosis with the world.  Only in this way can a cancer patient avoid the inevitable 'false niceness' that arises when people learn that one has cancer.  This 'niceness' can be grievous, indeed, since it is so flagrantly evident and it always seems to arise from the most unexpected of persons.
     --Most patients and their families turn to their faith life, or lack thereof, in a fresh way, for better or for worse.  Some turn to God for love and support, and other believers 'hate Him'.  Atheists and agnostics have no one to blame, except...perhaps... some hapless health care provider.  So they will turn their wrath elsewhere unless and until they can accept their diagnosis and lose their anger.
     --There will be those who completely 'drop out' of a cancer patient's life, rather than face the prospect of having to deal with cancer 'face-to-face'.  Try not to be too hard on those who stay away, for they will know well what they have done or not done.
     --People 'there' for the cancer patient in the beginning will 'drop away' over time for any number of reasons.  Remember that people have their own troubles and one can never know who, themselves, has cancer or is struggling to live with the cancer diagnosis and treatment of a loved one.  You just never know!
     --Everything changes when one has cancer, even the little things.  Perception of day-to-day matters, for instance, take on greater or lesser importance, dependent upon the severity of the cancer diagnosis and all else related to it.
     --Money matters take center stage as medical costs escalate for the family, sometimes bankrupting them completely.  It is best not to have overly-high expectations for help if it is not readily apparent that it is available.
     --Eventually the patient (and his or her 'advocate' if they are lucky enough to have one) stands alone in the face of the never-ending options presented as part of their cancer care.
     --Any and all emotional reactions are influenced by the many drugs (including anaesthesia), treatments, surgeries, radiations, etc a cancer patient is likely to be subject to, so it is good to 'expect the unexpected'.  Therapeutic 'steroids' can induce a rage like no other after extended treatment, for instance, as can some of the psychotropic drugs used for anxiety and depression control.
     --And finally, at the end of the day, a person with cancer will learn beyond a shadow of a doubt who their 'true friends' are and who really, truly cares about them.
     There are many other 'changes' attendant to dealing with cancer and the patient has a choice: he/she can either choose to be alternately dying from/suffering with/living with/fighting against/struggling with/gaining over/beating/triumphing over this dread condition.
     The head and the heart determine many a cancer outcome.
     Rest assured, your choice of reaction and mind-set (or 'free will' as we believers would say) is about the only thing the cancer patient can truly control to even the slightest degree.  It takes time, but eventually a good number of cancer patients figure this out for themselves.
      And this brings us to the very public disclosure by 'Blog-O-Rama' Ken Dixon's recent disclosure that he has bladder cancer.
     In fact, it is a rather lengthy piece intended to send out a very good lesson, which I will even repeat here: 'If there's blood in your urine-even absent other signs and symptoms-get thee to a doctor immediately'!
     Good advice, that.  Dixon's syndicated newspaper column also contained an attempt at humor ('bladder ball'?) to be taken with a grain of salt, the overall message being one of a person with cancer 'reaching out' to all in his time of need--a most human response to a devastating diagnosis.
      It would be no surprise if Ken picks up where he left off in the blogosphere and/or on Facebook with a detailed blow-by-blow description of the ordeal he is going through, albeit for a much smaller, specialized 'audience' than the one he reaches through newspaper syndication.
     Forums and blogs abound on every medical subject under the sun.  Such endeavors are educational and cathartic, indeed, and it is always good to share information and inspiration with others, as one can.
     But poor Ken has a problem with inspiration, which he reveals as openly as his bladder cancer diagnosis:

"This whole bladder business dates back to mid-February when I finally admitted that those were traces of blood in my urine. That was the only symptom. No pain, just a few drops of blood at the end of a urination.

From there the CAT scan showed some sort of polyp activity on the inside. My first urologist initially played his cards close to his chest, but said that if it was the worst, if it was cancer, I could always pray.

Praying is not a medical option for an atheist."

      I can understand Dixon's need to dig his heels in and assert his life's paradigm of atheism.
      As I said above,   "Most patients and their families turn to their faith life, or lack thereof, in a fresh way, for better or for worse".
     But I have good news for Ken here.  HE need not believe himself, for the prayers of others to be effective for him!
     Numerous studies have proven that even those with no faith, for atheists and for the agnostic doubters amongst us, intercessory and substitutionary prayer works!
     So Ken's in good hands spiritually, so long as believers do what they should and pray for someone and their family who are suffering.
God grant Ken and his loved ones the strength, fortitude and discernment they need at this time in their struggle with his bladder cancer.
And may God Bless the hands and hearts of health care providers, especially those who pray and who counsel their patients to do like-wise.
