"Beautiful Custom Green Grishko Pointe Shoes" By Rev. Barbara Sexton Dear Ones Healing Ministry

These are Grishko Maya 1's (gently broken-in before dyeing and decorating) with Bloch Elastorib ribbons sewn on.
Please note that these are 'fully functioning' pointe shoes.  I have taken care in designing and creating them to assure that they will withstand the rigors of dancing (test results forthcoming) and not interfere with a dancer's 'technique' in any way at all.
By this I mean that no decorative details come in contact with the dancer's foot, the drawstring is fully-functioning and dye-transfer is not an issue.  Note that the inner 'tie-dye' effect was achieved by delicately dabbing some dilute dye here and there in an effort to 'compensate for' some of the 'blue bleed-through' caused by the initial dye process.
Here are the general instructions if you'd like to replicate this 'look' for yourselves.

1)  First you must prepare the shoes for dyeing-(see my other article "BARB'S DYE PROCESS FOR POINTES (BLACK) & ALL SATIN SHOES--Easy Do-It-Yourself Instructions")
LINK: http://dearoneshealingministry.blogspot.com/2012/03/barbs-dye-process-for-pointes-black-all.html
2)  Mix the following to achieve the desired green color.  Be sure to 'test' your colors--wet and dry--on paper towels and on scraps of pink or European pink ('peachy pink') satin to get a true read of your colors.  Note that these dyes always dry a LIGHTER color than when they are wet.
The formula used includes Esquire Brand Shoe Dye in 'Skipper Blue' and 'Metallic Gold' along with Simply Spray Soft Fabric Paint in 'Brite Yellow' (below)
 Esquire Shoe Dye LINK: http://www.shoecaresupplies.com/Shoe_Dye_p/esquire-leather-kit.htm?gclid=CNfxsa6jgK8CFYbe4AodZg_v1Q
Simply Spray LINK:  http://www.simplyspray.com/buy.html

Start with the Esquire Metallic Gold, spray in some Simply Spray Brite Yellow and add a little Esquire 'Skipper Blue' to adjust to the proper green.  Add a little water to 'thin', but do not use a very watery mixture, since you do not want to saturate the pointe shoe.  When your test samples dry to the desired color, apply a thin coat of dye to completely and evenly cover each shoe, and let dry for about an hour.  Then apply a second coat and allow to dry for at least one day before applying decorations.

3)  After the shoes are dry, dye the ribbons, one at a time, one side at a time.  Start at the attachment end and 'pull the dye along the ribbon' using the foam brush in the palm of your hand..finishing out to the end.  Be careful with doing this to not let the wet ribbons brush against the finished shoes.  Also, be sure to lay the wet ribbons on plastic, for the paper towels will only 'wick dye' out of the ribbons.  And as the ribbons dry, some excess dye is bound to 'pool' on the plastic, so let be sure to blot this up periodically until it is no longer necessary, as the ribbons dry.  Better yet, if it is possible, 'hang' the pointe shoes up in some manner so that the ribbons can hang freely to air dry.  (Again watch for spills and drips, though.)

4)  Use white 'sticky glue' (I used Aleene's Original Tacky Glue-All Purpose-available at Michaels Crafts stores and elsewhere) to neatly apply ribbons and decorations as desired.  Be sure not to place or paste anything on the bottom sole of the pointe shoe, as it will interfere with the dancer's ability to 'feel' the floor.  Note in the second photo from the top that the ribbon is snipped and neatly glued down near the edge of the leather outersole.  I don't know how well this will 'hold-up' to the punishment of a full performance, but experience tells me that, in general, 'cloth-to-cloth' adhesion using this sticky glue is generally very tenacious...Almost impossible to 'undo', in fact, so it should be fine during vigorous use!

5)  Some dye 'bleed-through' will be inevitable with all dyeing methods.  You can choose to ignore it or do some 'minor embellishing' as I did with the 'tie-dye motif' in order to make your pointe shoe project more pleasing to the eye.

6)  You can dye the drawstrings after the shoes, themselves, are dry.  Pull the strings out a bit, dye them and let them dry.  Or, you can do as a I did- just tuck them in without dyeing them and don't worry about them, for they should not show anyway.

7)  Invariably, satin pointe shoes will 'SHRINK' a bit after dyeing.  The less-'watery' the dye you use, the less the shrinkage.  However, you must take this into consideration whether you are dyeing shoes for yourself or for your dancer.

That's for these beautiful shoes.  Your decorating options are limitless, as you can see!

So 'go for it'!  If you feel more comfortable 'asking for some advice in advance'--before you dye your pointes--just click on 'comments' below, ask your question(s) and I will answer.
You can also email me directly at: BarbaraKSexton@aol.com and I will answer you as best I can.
May your lives and your dancing be blessed!
Love,
Rev. Barb

"Pointe Shoe Hi Tech: How To Use Achilles Tendon-Sparing BLOCK 'ELASTORIB' Ribbon" By Rev. Barbara Sexton Dear Ones Healing Ministry

ABOVE:  Bloch Sonatas with TMT technology (TMT30L) with Bloch 'Elastorib' ribbons--So comfortable even through a bout of Achilles tendinitis (with 4" diam circular 'bruise' over the area!-OW!!!)  Those Elastoribs are a Godsend!  The initial positioning and fitting is a bit tricky, but with practice they are easily fitted and sewn on.
THIS IS PART OF A SERIES DESCRIBING THE PREPARATION OF TMT BLOCH POINTE SHOES COMBINED WITH BLOCH ELASTORIB ('ACHILLES TENDON-SPARING') RIBBONS
Advantages:
--Elastoribs are very ankle-friendly, comfortable.
--TMT Technology Blochs can be broken in very quickly by activating the heat-sensitive 'paste' in them, molding them to the dancer's feet and subsequently 'setting them' in the refrigerator!
--Sounds 'funny', but it works GREAT!
ABOVE: Four separate elastoribs (two per shoe) per pack--enough for one pair of pointe shoes
It is important that the young ballerina strictly follow the instructions of her dance Mistress/Instructor according to the rules and regs of the particular dance academy.  However, here are some recommendations for you if you are left to your own devices:
MY RECOMMENDED STEPS FOR SEWING ON ELASTORIBS:
1) Take two of the four pieces of Elastorib and place them under one foot in your shoe as if they were one.  Be sure they are under your arch.  HINT: Pin the two pieces under your foot together to make 'once continuous piece' if this helps you place the Elastoribs under your arch more easily.
Remember that the elastic part of the Elastorib must fit evenly over the back of your foot, over the Achilles tendon area.

Also, be aware that, unlike with 'regular ribbons', with 'elastoribs' the OUTER ribbon is wrapped around the ankle FIRST.
2)  Using safety pins, PIN the ribbons to the shoe (horizontally) just under the drawstring line.  Make sure the ribbon is angled in your shoe so that the net effect is to have your pointe shoe fully 'drawn up ' under your arch once the ribbon is snugged.   Also make sure that the 'free end' of the ribbon is sufficiently long to wrap around your ankle the required number of times.
3)  Once you your Elastorib is 'positioned', use a pencil to 'mark-off' where you want to cut off the ribbon excess inside the shoe.  You'll probably want to leave (from the top edge of the shoe drawstring area) approximately 1 1/2" (one and a half inches) excess.  I divide this 1 1/2" into 3/8 sections (pencil lines), so that my final result is even, flat, neat and non-irritating to the foot.
 4)  AGAIN Re-check that the elastic on these ribbons sets upon your Achilles tendon and that there is enough ribbon on the other ends to wrap around your ankle sufficiently.
3)  If you are satisfied with things, mark vertical pencil lines on the lining of your shoe on both sides of your now-properly positioned Elastoribs.  Then unpin them from your shoe and seal the raw ends of the Elastoribs as you usually would.  I use 'Sally Hansen' acrylic clear nail polish (in the round blue bottle), but you may wish to use the old 'flame' seal method.  Just don't use BOTH of these methods concurrently for obvious reasons, as nail polish is FLAMMABLE.
4)  While the nail polish is still 'wet', fold the excess ribbon cut end 'once' up 3/8" and then, again, another 3/8" and hold or secure with a bobby pin for a few seconds while you ready your needle for sewing.
5)  Re-pin your prepared ribbon end back into place, again making sure that your ribbons are angled (or even straight) in your shoe so that the net effect is to have them fully drawn up under your arches once the ribbon is snugged.

ABOVE: Same Bloch Sonata TMT30L's (which are cheap, fun to 'break in' with heat from a hairdryer and turn out to be surprisingly comfortable and reasonably long-lasting) 'setting' in the fridge for about five minutes to 'set' the thermoplastic I had molded to my ('peasant' aka 'Giselle') feet.  Sew elastics and ribbons, including Elastoribs, on before heat-setting these pointes.
6)  The uppermost and middle lines of sewing are running stitches (like a line of dashes).  In other words, running stitches should be used above and below the 'drawstring area'.  The bottommost lines (on the inner shoe lining) and on the 'fold line' of the Elastoribs (and any other ribbons) should be 'whip-stitched'.  Whip-stitching is also called the 'overhand stitch'.  All sewing should be as 'continuous' as possible and thread knots should be 'buried' under ribbon folds/edges so that will not irritate the dancer's bare foot.
7)  Once you're done sewing, put on your pointes, tie them and cut off any excess free ribbon on the Elastoribs.  Be sure to leave enough ribbon length to be 'tucked in'.  You don't want distracting and unprofessional 'piggy tails' on your ankle!  Also, don't forget to 'seal' the free ends of the Elastoribs using either nail polish or by flame.
ABOVE:  Take a look at how I sew my ribbons on. (Click to enlarge)  There are many different ways to sew them on as well as different 'elastics/ribbons' combinations.  Sew elastics on first. Over time, each dancer finds a method she likes best.  If any dancers-budding, intermediate, advanced or otherwise...Or if any 'ballet moms or dads' have any questions about what I've written here (or anything else ballet-related), just email me at BarbaraKSexton@aol.com.  You can also just comment right here, of course, if you prefer.
Thank you so much for reading this--I sure hope it helps.  Stay tuned for future pieces on pointe shoe safety, great healing regimens for dance injuries and all sorts of 'helpful hints' for those who are enchanted by that amazing, astounding thing of beauty known as 'BALLET'!
God Bless You All!

"How To Dye Pink Ballet Ribbon To European (Peachy) Pink--Quick & Easy" By Reverend Barbara Sexton 'Dear Ones Healing Ministry'

Dear 'Ballet Moms', Ballerinas & Dance Enthusiasts:
You know how it is.  You have your shoes and then you realize your ribbons are the wrong color.
And it's 'crunch time' and you know you won't get your order in time for an upcoming class or performance!
So what do you do?  (When you're done weeping as you furiously 'google' every ballet supply house within a 90 mile radius, so you can there and back in the allotted time, that is!)
And will you even have TIME to sew on your elastics and/or ribbons, even if you manage to locate the right ones in European pink or Capezio pink or Freed peach or whatever color you need?
Well, relax, for I have a solution for you which is both quick and easy in emergency situations.
     THE TEMPORARY FIX:
Simply drop some yellow food coloring into a few ounces of some 91% isopropyl alcohol at a concentration of three drops yellow coloring per 1 oz of alcohol (to get the color in the photo above).  Be sure to stir the solution very well with a plastic spoon!
Yes, you can use 70% isopropyl alcohol, but the higher the percentage the 'better the wetting ability' of the final dye.   Don't forget that your fingers have oils which transfer to everything and the alcohol will simply allow the coloring to permeate the ribbon better...especially if it is re-used ribbon.
Wear plastic gloves if you like and be sure to protect the surface on which you are working.
After you've made your solution, it is a simple matter to 'dip and swirl' your pink ribbon until the desired shade is reached.
Blot the excess off the ribbon that has just been dyed and check the color and re-dip if necessary.  The ribbon will dry fairly quickly because the alcohol evaporates, but you can also use a blow-dryer on low to speed up the process.
Be sure to do some 'test samples' before you dip your good ribbons (or elastics-this method can be used to temporarily color elastics too.)  The duration of dipping is not really long enough to radically affect most elastics available today...But again, EXPERIMENT.
Now I must emphasize that if these ribbons get wet, they will 'bleed' a bit.  But one class (or even one standard dance on stage) is not likely to cause any major bleeding problems.
Indeed, it is desirable to keep the satin part of any pointe shoe dry so that 'spotting' does not occur.
Example number 1
Example number 2
When I figure this one out, I'll let you know what caused this discoloration!
But vigorous dancing causes a great deal of perspiration, of course, so this method of dyeing pink ballet ribbons to European peachy pink will only last for as long as the ribbons stay dry.
Still, for the budding ballerina (and more likely than not, her mom or other caring woman) it will definitely be useful.
     PERMANENT METHOD:
I don't know how this would work out, but it should be just fine.
I haven't tried using 'Rit' or other permanent fabric dye (in yellow or light orange) as an experiment yet.
So if any of you want to try to do a permanent dye job, so to speak, just remember that we don't want anything toxic against the skin.
Since most wear tights, this won't be a problem, although some dancers prefer to be bare-footed for certain things so as to 'feel the floor better'.
So there you have it.  I hope my suggestions will buy you some 'breathing room' when the clock is ticking and your ribbons are not the right color.
Please let me know how your experiments are going by commenting here or by emailing me at BarbaraKSexton@aol.com
Next up:  Emergency gluing of ribbons when the clock has you pressured, with just some basic 'tacking' for safety with needle & thread (or dental floss, if that is your preference).
(Sssshhhh....I don't know if you want your Ballet Instructor/Mistress to know about this!)
Traditionalists may 'balk', but I'll be 'blow-drying' my TMT Bloch pointe shoes shortly (they are constructed with a heat-activated 'adhesive paste' that can be molded to the feet and then put in the fridge 'to set'.
I guess I love 'tradition' as much as I love scientific innovation...especially in all the good things in life, like ballet, that make our lives so much better and so much more enjoyable!
God Bless You
