 Dear Ones:

     As of today, local Arizona news sources alert us that the U.S. Forest Service indicate that the smoke from the eastern Arizona fire Wallow Fire has spread as far east as New Jersey, New York City, southern Massachusetts and over the Atlantic Ocean.

     It's also moving into Mexico, New Orleans, Kansas and Florida and this will CONTINUE!

     I would urge all of you to stay inside with air-conditioning wherever possible.  Be sure to seek the advice of your personal health care advisor if you are in a smoke-filled area, as to how to 'proceed' while this smoke and fire event continues.

     It may be that the only 'safe' thing to do will be to move to a smoke-free area for the duration.

     Few have 'respirators', but in a pinch, N-95 (those 'hard' facial masks) masks may help...as will something as simple as a wet bandanna wrapped over the nose and mouth.

     Contact lens wearer, take care and maybe use your old 'specs', unless your eye health care provider says otherwise.  Use your common sense if smoke particles get 'caught' under a lens.

     Cotton stuffing in the nose can work in an emergency, if you are able to breathe only through your nose.

     Since this is an emergency situation for so many, my 'crash-course' on alternative care for ASTHMA-Smoke-induced or other- is as follows:

     For adults:  take one Solaray Brand Lobelia 50 mg capsule at the onset of an attack, up to 4 caps per day.  Lobelia can be taken when inhalers 'fail' or are unavailable.  It can also be taken as a 'adjunct asthma treatment' to supplement whatever pharmaceuticals a patient may be taking.

     If you prefer the stronger and faster liquid extract, I recommend lobelia liquid extract.

     My general rule for dosing in adults is 4-7 drops of either the vinegar or alcohol Lobelia extract.

     Many people think the vinegar extract 'tastes like salad dressing' and it can be taken alone right in the mouth, to stop an asthma attack in it's tracks!

BE SURE TO CHECK WITH YOUR PERSONAL HEALTH CARE PROVIDER BEFORE TAKING LOBELIA OR ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVE REGIMEN SUGGESTED HERE.

     (I pray that your physician has an extensive knowledge of herbs and is enlightened enough to be open-minded and to trust that you, the consumer, are capable of examining and are 'entitled to' ALL your options!)

     Since many 'lungs' have already been filled with smoke and soot, I am also recommending a rarely heard of herb called elecampane.  Herb Pharm has this in liquid extract form.  Unlike the pharmaceutical guaifenesin found in over-the-counter 'expectorant' formulas, elecampane actually WORKS as an expectorant.

     (Guaifenesin has been 'grandfathered-in', although it has never actually been proven to have the 'efficiency or efficacy' necessary were an NDA (new drug application) submitted for it today!  Note to pharmaceutical professionals: I welcome any data which challenges my assertion here.  Please  send mail to: BarbaraKSexton@aol.com )

       The dose for the elecampane is one dropperful every 6 hrs as needed, to be taken on a daily basis for no more than 10 days.

     I recommend that elecampane be given during waking hours, as you will want to 'work with' your body as you cough up whatever residue may be in your lungs.

     The third component of my 'smoke/asthma regimen' is the addition of liquid Echinacea Root extract at a dose of two dropperfuls every six hours.  

     Echinacea root extract may be taken for as long as six weeks at a time.  Consult your alternative health care provider for information on the proper way to 'cycle' dosing with this herbal immunostimulant/cleanser/remover of toxins.

     Place your liquid extracts TOGETHER in a little pure water, swirl and drink.

     For extra effect-especially with smoke-irritated throats-GARGLE with this mixture, then swallow, for the echinacea is a 'natural mouth and throat anesthetic'.  You will know you've got 'good extract' if your tongue 'tingles' a bit after you take echinacea.

     Write my suggestions here on an index card and carry them with you so that you will have this information with you at all times.

     And be sure to build your own 'natural alternative FIRST AID KIT'.

     Remember that in most emergencies, regular medical supplies will run out and you must be prepared to care for yourself and your loved ones (don't forget PETS) with whatever means you have on hand until you can get to your regular health care provider!

As crews start to get a handle on the Wallow Fire , smoke continues to pour across the U.S. continent.
The wildfire in eastern Arizona had burned through more than 408,000 acres as of Friday.
A map posted on the U.S. Forest Service website show smoke from the Wallow Fire has drifted through the Midwest as far east as New Jersey, New York City, the southern tip of Massachusetts and over the Atlantic Ocean.
The smoke is also moving south and southeast into Mexico and through the Gulf of Mexico, through New Orleans and into northwestern Florida.
The heaviest smoke is seen heading northeast into New Mexico and into southern Kansas; through several Midwest and around New Orleans.
The Wallow fire started May 29 and is believed to be human caused.

     Oh boy.  Things are MUCH WORSE than they appeared at first blush with the recent McNeil Children's Drugs Recall.   From the FDA Inspection Report at the McNeil plant in Fort Washington, PA,  it has become obvious that McNeil's quality control problems are SEVERE.  According to the FDA field inspection reports, McNeil KNOWINGLY used raw materials that they KNEW were contaminated with BACTERIA.  This, dear Readers, is simply unconscionable.  Here are the highlights of the Inspection Report. MY TAKE IS IN CAPS, followed by the official FDA "Observations".
1)  GRAM NEGATIVE ORGANISMS (BACTERIA) FOUND IN TYLENOL RAW  MATERIALS "The responsibilities and procedures applicable to the quality control unit are not fully followed.
2)  MCNEIL HAS LITTLE OR NO QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURES AND DOES NOT CONFORM TO CGMP'S ('CURRENT GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICES') "There are no written procedures for production and process controls designed to assure that the drug products have the identity, strength, quality, and purity they purport or are represented to possess." MORE SPECIFICALLY: "It (McNeil)  does not maintain adequate laboratory facilities or e stmg an approval (or rejection) of components and drug products; it neglects review and approval of validation protocols regarding changes in product processes and equipment to determine when revalidation is or should be warranted; it is default in investigations, tracking, trending and maintenance of consumer complaint follow-up; and it lacks trending ofproducts, components (i.e., water), and complaints to demonStrate a broad perspective to assure plant conformance with CGMPs."
3)BAD MIXING MANUFACTURING PRACTICES "Control procedures fail to include adequacy of mixing to assure uniformity and homogeneity."
4) NO WRITTEN QUALITY CONTROL RECORDS DURING MANUFACTURING (NO IN-LINE TESTING) "Control procedures are not established which monitor the output and validate the performance of those manufacturing processes that may be responsible for causing variability in the characteristics of in-process material and the drug product."
5) NO CUSTOMER COMPLAINT FILES/CORRECTIVE ACTIONS/RESPONSE FOR COMPLAINTS OF PRODUCT WITH  FOREIGN MATERIAL, PARTICULATE MATTER AND/OR CONTAMINATION. "Written production and process control procedures are not followed in the execution ofproduction and process control functions"
6) NO ASSURANCE OR INVESTIGATION OF QUALITY, PURITY, ETC FOR FINISHED PRODUCTS DESTINED TO BE ADMINISTERED TO CHILDREN WITH KNOWN RAW MATERIAL BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION.  MCNEIL RELEASED FOR SALE THESE PRODUCTS ANYWAY! "There is a failure to thoroughly review any unexplained discrepancy whether or not the batch has been already distributed."
7) NO GMP (GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICES) TRAINING...NOT MANY GMP'S FOR THAT MATTER, EITHER ACCORDING TO THESE FDA OBSERVATIONS. "GMP training is not conducted with sufficient frequency to assure that employees remain familiar with CGMP requirements applicable to them."
8) NO CUSTOMER COMPLAINT FILES "Procedures describing the handling of all written and oral complaints regarding a drug product are not followed"
9) NO SECOND PERSON 'SIGNING OFF' ON MANUFACTURING CHECKLISTS (IF MCNEIL HAD CHECKLISTS, THAT IS)  "Each container of component dispensed to manufacturing is not examined by a second person to assure that the weight or measure is correct as stated in the batch records."
10) BAD LABELING AND LABELING PRACTICES  "Strict control is not exercised over labeling issued for use in drug product labeling operations."
11) NO STABILITY TESTING (WHICH KIND OF RENDERS MY 'TESTING OF RETAINED SAMPLES SOMEWHAT MOOT) "There is no written testing program designed to assess the stability characteristics of drug products."
12) NO LAB PRODUCT QUALITY STANDARDS (SPECIFICATIONS, AND SOP'S-STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES) TO ASSURE BATCH-TO-BATCH CONSISTENCY  AS JUDGED AGAINST 'APPROVED SAMPLES' OF A GIVEN PRODUCT) "Laboratory controls do not include the establishment of scientifically sound and appropriate test procedures designed to assure that components and drug products conform to appropriate standards of identity, strength, quality and purity."
13) BAD LAMINAR FLOW HOODS/FILTERS, NO OR INSUFFICIENT MICRO WORK, DIRT/LACK OF CLEANING/NO LOG IN RAW MATERIAL WEIGH AREA, DUST, DIRT, DEBRIS, DUCT TAPE, "GREY/BROWN DUST ON INCUBATOR BOTTOMS, BAD ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE BY MICROBIOLOGISTS AND MORE  "Adequate lab facilities for testing and approval or rejection of components and drug products are not available to the quality control unit."
14) LAB REFRIGERATORS NOT CALIBRATED PROPERLY Laboratory records do not include complete records of the periodic calibration of laboratory instruments, gauges, and recording devices.
15) SOP (STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE) PROBLEMS WITH MICRO SAMPLING SWABS FOR CLEANED EQUIP, LACK OF APPROPRIATE COLONY-COUNTING STANDARDS, ETC. "Written specifications for laboratory controls do not include a description of the sampling procedures used."
16) IGNORING THE QUALITY CONTROL RULE TO 'TAKE YOUR OWN SAMPLES AND USE APPROPRIATE SAMPLING METHOD(S)', MCNEIL HAD RAW MATERIAL MANUFACTURERS PULL (INSUFFICIENT) SAMPLES FOR THEM "Samples taken of in-process materials for determination of conformance to specifications are not representative.
17)WHAT'S WHAT AT MCNEIL? LEAKING BAGS, TOO. "Each lot of components,was not appropriately identified as to its status in terms of being quarantined, approved or rejected."
18) NO MICRO TESTING ON WATER USED "Components are not microscopically examined when appropriate."
19) NO CLEANING & MORE 'GREY-BROWN DUST' "Records are not kept for the maintenance and inspection of equipment"
20) LACK OF CHECKLIST/SIGN-OFF'S "The persons double-checkng the cleaning and maintenance are not dating and signing or initialing the equipment cleaning and use log"

     I have many years of first hand experience working with FDA inspectors breathing down my neck (they literally 'dog you' every minute of the day)...and God Bless them for doing it!  Here is an example of a very valuable service the FDA performs on behalf of the public!  I don't always think so highly of them, but in this case, the FDA is 'dead on'. 
     I'm sorry to say this, but at this point I would be skeptical about ANYTHING McNeil has to say on it's own behalf,  unless and until their claims are fully verified by repeated, independent testing.
      The FDA will need to do what they do in cases like this, which will likely include the following, based on what I know about these things:
---Test every 'raw material' in house now for microbial contamination and to see if it meets specifications chemically
---Test every in-line product and final products in house now and test as above.
---Test all 'retained samples' of raw materials, in-line products and final products and all packaging, as above, going back as many years as the FDA Inspectors see fit.
---Have independent labs repeat all FDA testing
---Mandate that McNeil have independent testing done on all applicable samples also by 2+ independent labs.
      I think you get the idea.  It will be a major job.  Your job is to not use any of these products until further notice.  I will update you as appropriate.
     It's difficult to not 'stand in judgment' of the shoddy QC practices and other practices exhibited by McNeil.  God only knows what they've been thinking, to attempt to 'get away' with things as they are and have been.
     Don't forget that many pets are given 'human' medications, too.  God forbid that a child, adult or beloved pet has been harmed in any way by the negligence and lack of caring demonstrated by McNeil.

FDA Children's Tylenol Recall McNeil: Alternatives For Concerned Parents By Rev Barbara Sexton "The Biblical Biochemist-Where Science Meets the Cross"

My Dear Ones:

     I see that many of you are so very concerned about the recent FDA Recall of McNeil Children's Products including Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl and Zyrtec. I apologize for not following up soon enough with 'alternative suggestions'. I wrongly assumed that you would get timely advice from your health care providers. Please remember that many 'docs' nowadays have excellent websites with support personnel standing by to respond to you. Please do consult with them in all situations such as these and don't give up on them!
     My advice for all concerned parents is to USE THE ALTERNATIVE GENERIC FORMS of the McNeil pharmaceuticals that have been recalled. Please read my disclaimer at the bottom of this page and consult your physician. I will follow-up with some Alternative Medicine pediatric suggestions for you, also.
     It you were to consult with me, I would recommend Motrin instead of Tylenol. In other words, I would suggest ibuprofen instead of acetaminophen. As always, let your pocketbook be your guide as you follow the dosing advice of your pediatrician or other health care advisors.
     I advise against Zyrtec and use and recommend Benadryl-like (diphenhydramine) products instead.  I recommend the capsule form, which can be swallowed or 'crushed, mixed into applesauce or yogurt' and taken that way.
     Many prescription pharmaceuticals enjoy popularity and then fade into obscurity. That may be the case with 'Zyrtec', which I do not like. Use diphenhydramine and pseudoephedrine, instead, for allergy relief.
     McNeil will eventually get a control on it's 'Quality Control Problems' (an area of my expertise), but you need to use your common sense in order to care for your children.
     Please check in here regularly so that you can protect the health of all your loved ones as you consult your doctor in your attempts to protect your family.

Dear Ones:
     Here are the very effective, natural supplements you can take to treat your asthma.  These are recommendations for adults and for children over 12 years of age who are in good general health (besides being 'asthmatic') only. 
TO STOP AN ASTHMA ATTACK IN IT'S TRACKS:
Take 1 (one) 50 mg Lobelia capsule or 7-10 drops of liquid extract
          2 (two) Nettle Root Power capsules
          2 (two) Vitamin C 500 mg caps or tabs (=1,000 mg)
with some water.  If you take nothing else in the event of uncontrolled asthma, TAKE THE LOBELIA!  (For extreme cases, call the Paramedics immediately, of course.)  
     This is a tried-and-true remedy which has been around since humankind discovered herbal medicine and I have used the regimen above in practice for over thirty years now. 
      I will write specifics about the supplements above separately in future features of my 'Asthma Chronicles Series' which is indexed on the upper right column of the home page of www.DearOnesHealingMinistry.blogspot.com
     Lobelia may be taken IN ADDITION TO your inhaler treatment....or as a 'rescue dose' when it's not yet time for your next  inhaler (or other asthma medication) treatment.  It is also a terrific 'first line of defense' when someone suffers from their first asthma attack, especially if it is out of 'the-clear-blue' (in which case I would immediately look to FOOD ALLERGIES, also to be discussed in the future!)   
HOW TO USE LOBELIA CAPSULES: You may take up to three (3) lobelia (50 mg) capsules per day, as needed. This herb is wonderful for use 'between inhaler treatments' or especially when...God forbid...your inhaler or oral asthma medications totally fail to provide you with relief. Sadly, all inhalers fail after a while (usually within two years) as the body acclimates itself to the pharmaceuticals contained therein.

    The liquid form of Lobelia that I recommend in the event of throat closure and when persons are unable to swallow a capsule is a vinegar liquid extract of NATURE'S HERBS WILD COUNTRYSIDE EXTRACT OF LOBELIA.  It is usually available in many Health Food Stores.  Place 7-10 drops of the extract into the mouth of the asthmatic person, followed by some water.  The extract will be absorbed under the tongue and provide welcome relief very rapidly, usually within 5 minutes...all after you have called 911, of course. This preparation tastes like Italian salad dressing.
     Another liquid preparation that may be 'used in a pinch' is NATURE'S ANSWER LOBELIA EXTRACT IN ORGANIC ALCOHOL.  The dose is 7-10 drops under the tongue, or swished in the mouth with some water.  Relief, again, will very rapid.








PARENTS, CAREGIVERS AND THOSE WITH CONFIRMED OR SUSPECTED ALLERGIES: Be sure to carry at least six Lobelia capsules (50 mg capsules) with you at all times.  If you don't mind the weight, you can carry one of the liquid extracts with you.  In the event that you have to use your Lobelia on yourself or others, be sure to replace your purse/pocket supply immediately.  Lobelia could save you life or that of a loved one or of someone in your midst and is something that belongs in everyone's emergency kits.
     With the way things are in the world today, it makes sense to be prepared in the event that it is impossible to refill one's medical prescriptions or if those prescriptions are lost or destroyed.  Run all this by your medical doctor if you plan on using my recommendations.  Also, seek the advice of an Alternative Health Care Professional in your area, if you are able to, so that you can reap the benefits of the best of both Alternative and Traditional Medicine.  Have you doctor communicate with this person so that your health care encompasses the best of all treatment options.
     Now that I've provided you with herbal and natural emergency asthma treatment options, stay tuned for future advice on how to help your body become less 'trigger-happy' when exposed to asthma-inducing substances and factors.  We may not always be able to 'avoid trigger's, but the wonderful herbs and other natural substances God gives us are here to help our bodies be the best that they can be and we do well to use these gifts, with gratitude and compassion.

     Asthma is a very common 'condition'.  Sometimes it is sporadic, with episodes being triggered, perhaps, by exposure to certain foods or odd air-borne allergens, such as fiber particles or certain 'dusts'.  Sometimes it is 'chronic'...or can become chronic...depending upon what is done or not done, what is 'taken' or not taken.  Sadly, sometimes asthma medications and treatments contribute to this revolving door effect.  Anyone who is 'inhaler dependent' or has a child who is, knows the uncertainty and discomfort this causes.  Pretty much, one's life revolves around "THE INHALER"

      The body is a complex 'reactor' to environmental triggers.  Unfortunately, lung tissue is easily 'sensitized' to react and once one has an asthma attack under certain conditions, it is likely that the same thing will occur under similar conditions.  This is analogous to the phenomenon where hives on the skin tend to recur with the right trigger at the very same place(s) they did before...as any person with sensitive skin knows only too well.
     Knowing these things can lead patients to be very anxious about going about their daily lives.  And stress like that only makes any asthmatic/allergic responses even  worse than they already are.  What nature intends as a means of 'closing out foreign invaders' (the closing of one's airways) goes into overdrive and can literally kill us!  The inflammatory response (the welts and wheals) of a dermatitis meant to gobble up and neutralize environmental irritants/allergens can go too far, producing  itchy, painful, open, weeping sores subsequently vulnerable to microbial and other infection and for what?  Our body's original defense mechanisms unchecked can actually be our undoing!



     Here's an example of what I mean above:  Let's say one develops a bad allergic dermatitis of some kind that is starting to look 'infected'.  The standard-of-care traditionally is to administer oral and topical steroids as well as an antibiotic, which hopefully is 'the right one' for the infection presenting. 
     The problem is that while the steroids will prompt the body to 'stop with the welt and wheal immune response', this also means that the body will not be able to use it's immune system to battle the incipient skin infection.  There's no time to wait for culture results for the infection, so an 'educated guess' of best antibiotic is made.  This is called 'prescribing empirically'.   
     If the wrong antibiotic is prescribed, that's a problem.  Worse yet, imagine if an allergy to a particular antibiotic kicks in here as well.  Now the physician will have to counteract that as well as whatever triggered the original reaction and the infection must be taken care of.  And in the worst-case scenario, after enough steroid and antibiotic use, the kidneys will be severely affected, at which point an infected dermatitis is the least of the patient's concerns...An unhappy set of circumstances, indeed.
     Don't get me wrong.  Steroids are great when you need them in an emergency.  But chronic use of steroids is never without inherent dangers, you should know.
     Traditional Medicine will always try stronger and stronger medications and treatments as needed.  While averting an immediate crisis, this constant upgrading of medical care can lead to a worsening of reactivity long-term..  The goal of traditional medicine is 'pound it all down' (if you can't 'kill it',  'cut it off' or reroute around it, that is).  Many times this works and the patient is satisfied with this type of treatment.
     Alternative Medicine takes a different approach, however.  The goal of Alternative Medicine is to help 'regulate, tamper down, desensitize and support' the body, so that it can act and react as our Creator intended.  Perhaps a personal story will illustrate this best.






     I was reared and trained with all things traditional in the biomedical community.  I chose cancer research over patient care, being most comfortable at the lab bench, truth be told, which is kind of ironic considering what I do now.
     I still subscribed to a traditional biomedical mentation when my daughter was born and it was determined that she had one of the first cases of an 'Epstein-Barr variant'.  Back then, we couldn't 'do' advanced  virological serotyping easily.  All we knew back then was that the Epstein-Barr virus causes 'mono', as well as some other poorly understood 'syndromes'. 
     Nowadays, what my daughter had is known as 'chronic fatigue syndrome' (CFS) with a whole group of immune system problems resulting in lowered immunity.  My poor baby was sick all the time and missing lots of school.  After one particularly scary grade-school hospitalization (her throat had closed up and she was unable to drink or eat) with high fever, she lived, I am convinced, because she got hydrated and her body simply fought back.  Our poor pediatrician did the best he could prescribing erythromycin (what good is an antibiotic against a virus?) for lack of anything else to try and that was when I had my epiphany:
INSTEAD OF JUST TRYING TO 'KILL THINGS' AND POUND THINGS DOWN, WHY NOT TRY TO BOOST THE EFFICIENCY AND EFFICACY OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM?








     And that was that.  I was introduced to Echinacea purpurea, I studied it to death, used it, learned about other herbs, applied my biochemical knowledge to those and to amino acids, vitamins and all sorts of other naturally occurring substances and here we are.  Eventually, I was able to decrease the frequency and severity of my daughter's constant infections.  She did, indeed, have a major and messy tonsillectomy in her early twenties with antibiotics and traditional pain medications.  Finally, several months after her cleansing surgery, a combination of traditional and alternative modalities have kept her in greatly improved health over-all.
     I am telling you this story, for I've applied this very same rationale to asthma cases.  Nothing breaks my heart more than to see some poor child and the parents suffer in fear with this horrible condition.  THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THERE IS HOPE FOR IMPROVEMENT IF YOU WILL JUST BEAR WITH ME AS I PRESENT IT TO YOU!  Part of my major 'life's-work' is to share the knowledge that I have to help others and asthma is one of those conditions that can really benefit from the natural approach.
     I would like to address you as if you were sitting here with me with your personal questions.  While I am unable to give you specific advice without knowing your individual medical history, I can share some valuable insight with you which may well set your mind at rest.  I want to share with you information and advice which will lessen your 'fear of things' if you happen to suffer from asthma and some other allergic responses that have you living great anxiety.  The specifics here are prompted from the recent mail I've received and if you have a question of your own, just email me at: BarbaraKSexton@aol.com  I will help if I can.
     FIRST of ALL:  If you have asthma, you need to be under the care of a medical doctor.  You must learn to determine and then avoid any and all triggers.  It is of vital importance that you avoid penicillin, for instance, if you are allergic to it and you should wear a medic alert bracelet and carry a card to that effect.  Don't feel silly carrying a note on you that you are allergic to shellfish, for instance, if it will kill you!  It is not always easy to know what's in the dishes we eat in restaurants and at dinner parties and a simple notification could save your life in the event of a severe asthmatic emergency situation.
    SECONDLY:  If you have mild-to-moderate asthma, there are many easy-to-use NATURAL TREATMENTS you can avail yourself of....with the okay of your regular medical doctor, that is.  I urge you to seek out a physician who has knowledge of "Alternative" or "Complementary" Medicine, or who, at least is 'open' to your participating in intelligent self-care under the advice of someone like myself in your area.  If your medical doctor balks at anything 'alternative/complementary', I suggest that you find a healthcare provider who is more enlightened pronto.  Such closemindedness is not in your best interest and as a patient you must assert your 'patients' rights' or have someone close to you do it for you.






     THIRDLY:  No matter how bad things are in terms of severity of 'attacks', I promise you that almost always things can be improved for you.  I'm not saying that it is possible to make someone who is 'asthmatic'  suddenly 'not asthmatic', but you can decrease the frequency and tendency to 'react' by following and utilizing some basic tenets I will be sharing with you.  I will also show you how to deal with asthmatic epidsodes when inhaler use is contraindicated.  And I have something natural for you to safely use between inhaler treatments, which can a real life-saver in some settings.
     FOURTH: Take responsibility for your health.  Only you know best how you feel, what works for you and what makes things worse.  If you need to, enlist the aid of a trusted loved one to help advocate for you when you visit the doctor.  Don't be shy!  A good physician always appreciates when patients take responsibility for themselves.  Read all you can on asthma.  Network and share information and be critical of everything you encounter until and unless it proves to work for you.
    FIFTH:  KEEP A DIARY.  Note times, things, foods, places, environmental conditions, etc so should an asthmatic episode occur, you will be able to analyze it in retrospect.  Be sure to note in that diary the specific treatment methods you've used per doctor's orders, how they worked and follow-up with recovery information.  If and when you try some of my alternative suggestions or those you've learned of elsewhere, be sure to note those as well.  Try to determine what drug/herb or drug/vitamin combination helps make your medications work better, worse or don't have any noticeable effects.

Dear Ones:

     This morning, I perused an FDA alert that certain asthma inhalers will be phased out:
"Asthma and COPD Inhalers That Contain Ozone-depleting CFCs to be Phased Out; Alternative Treatments Available"
     Let me first comment that the phrase "Alternative" Treatments' has NOTHING to do with the Alternative Medicine I use to help others.  In the context above, "Alternative" means 'other pharmaceuticals'.  Check out this FDA link of soon-to-be-discontinued asthma inhalers:

     The chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) under discussion are simple hydrocarbon derivatives of methane and ethane and they contain (bear with me here) chlorine and fluorine atoms. 
     The CFC's under discussion here are the last 'hold outs' still allowable for use, since they are for 'medicinal use'.  Unfortunately, this in no way makes the 'medicinal CFC propellants' in asthma inhalers safe in any way, contrary to what physicians and pharmaceutical manufacturers will tell you.   Trust me, I know only too well of the unknown dangers of many organochemicals from my many years as a chemist awash in...well, nevermind for now, it'll make a good story for later.
      The CFC debate is a tricky one I will now explain.  CFC's are very stable compounds.  This means that under 'ambient conditions', the things just will not break down.  A medical myth that's been around for millennia is the mind set which promulgates the following:  'If it's natural and stable, it's safe in all the medicines it's found in".
     WRONGO!!!
     Coal is 'natural and stable', but in dust form in the lungs, it proves deadly as it accumulates.  Silica is both 'natural and stable', yet collections of that dust in the lungs results in life-threatening 'silicosis'.  While these are two dust examples, chemical gases also can be 'natural and stable' and detrimental to one's health, when in the wrong place at the wrong time.
     The tragic practice of 'huffing' illuminates this.  People, mainly young people, will 'huff' the contents of various compressed gases in order to 'get high'.  One popular item is the compressed gas can sold at stationers used to clean computer equipment.  The 'high' is achieved at a great cost: air is displaced in the lungs by the propellants in the can and the body achieves a kind of euphoria attendant to 'near asphyxiation'.  In other words, a person's oxygen is 'cut off' and the body secretes endorphins which help ease the pain of 'air starvation'. 
     Huffers will repeat this time and time again, eventually suffering from permanent lung and brain damage--a tragic situation, indeed.  The inhalation of these propellant gases causes dizziness, loss of consciousness, cardiac arrhythmias, and can totally cut off a person's air supply like that!  Ironically, asthma inhalers have the potential to do the very same things.  If you don't believe, just look at the informational inserts in any of the asthma medications listed at the end of this piece.
     We all know how cold compressed gases can be and desperate huffers have even suffered 'insta-freeze' of the lungs, by getting a full blast of propellant only.  (Note to whipped cream can-to-mouth aficionados here)  And we all know that about another CFC known as 'Freon', formerly allowed for use in refrigeration units and the deep chill this CFC can provide, and so I ask you...
Why would anyone put a refrigerant/propellant in an inhalable asthma medication device and tell everyone that 'it is safe'?
     Well, it's not.  I know from my own practice that asthma inhalers invariably 'fail' within the first two years of use.  It's true and that's why asthma patients are constantly looking for 'new inhalers to try'.   Surely, the 'active ingredient' is a factor, but I'd like to address the 'inactive ingredients' factor as pertains to 'inhaler failure'.
     So you are lead to believe that your asthma inhaler's propellant is 'inert', 'stable', 'inactive' or something similar.  But is it?  Where does the CFC 'go' when you inhale it?  Does it stay in your lungs?  Do you 'exhale it'?  Does it get into your bloodstream?  These are questions you really deserve answers to and here's what you'll hear, followed by my take on things:
     You're told that the CFC's in asthma inhalers still in use 'have a minimal effect on the ozone layer.  WHAT THIS MEANS:  Let's take an individual inhaler all by itself.  Improperly disposed of CFC's don't do anything 'bad' until they get up high enough in the earth's atmosphere where they are bombarded by ultraviolet rays, freeing very active ozone-depleting chlorine ions.  That's when CFC's are bad for all of us, not just asthma sufferers.  Disposal of  the many empty and partially empty or full inhalers is a different story and is a problem for us all.
     You're told that your use of asthma inhalers will 'have a minimal effect on the ozone layer'.  WHAT THIS MEANS:  It's time to stop and think.  Your lungs and body are retaining inhaled CFC's and sure enough, the more CFC's in your lungs, the better it is for the ozone layer. 
     You're told that the CFC's in asthma inhalers are nothing like Freon or Halon (a well-known fire suppressant which is toxic if inhaled).  WHAT THIS MEANS: Asthma-inhaler users are too dense to realize that the little 'freeze' they get with their inhalers is due to a 'refrigerant effect' of the CFC's in it and they don't read the newspapers.
     You're told that the amount of CFC propellant in your asthma inhaler is 'minimal' and you hardly get any in you anyway.  WHAT THIS MEANS:  You know how when your inhaler is either low or empty, you get a 'puffing sound' anyway?  Well, this means you're inhaling the CFC propellant.  Besides being NOT GOOD FOR YOU, you're also not getting needed airway help. So whoever is selling you this 'whopper' is really a bad egg. 
     You're told that you only need an inhaler temporarily.  WHAT THIS MEANS:  One way or another--either due to drug side effects, fear of relapse, or overselling of medical testing, exams, and pharmaceuticals, once you are officially diagnosed as an 'asthmatic' by the medical community, that's it.  You've got asthma for life and 'you will need an inhaler'.  This is not necessarily true, but it does provide some good job security.
     You're told that ONLY an inhaler 'will help your asthma'.  WHAT THIS MEANS:  Your doctor is a hammer and you are a nail.  Hammer, meet nail.  Nail, meet hammer.
     You are told that ONLY pharmaceuticals are effective in treating asthma.  WHAT THIS MEANS: You will be 'on an inhaler' for the rest of your days, unless you are willing to do a little work and educate yourself.  And that's why I am here.  For those who are willing to read, I will help you in future articles.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced, in accordance with longstanding U.S. obligations under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, seven metered-dose inhalers (MDI) used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) will be gradually removed from the U.S. marketplace. These inhalers contain ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are propellants that move medication out of the inhaler and into the lungs of patients. Alternative medications that do not contain CFCs are available."
The phase out will include the following brands of inhalers:
