     Today, Mayor Michael Pavia has declared a 'state of emergency' for Stamford, CT:
"Mayor Michael Pavia is declaring a state of emergency effective at 8:00 a.m. Saturday
August 27th, 2011. This state of emergency will be in effect until further notice. The City recommends that residents in low-lying areas evacuate and seek shelter on higher ground. Evacuation should be complete by no later than 7:00 p.m. on Saturday August 27th. To determine if your home will likely be affected please review the maps included in
this briefing. Residents should make arrangements with family, friends or other accommodations immediately. If none of those options are available, the City is opening a shelter at Stamford High School on 55 Strawberry Hill Avenue at 5:00 PM. We are prepared to open additional shelters if necessary. Emergency workers at Stamford High School will direct evacuees to additional shelters if necessary.  Shelters are pet-friendly, but all animals must be crated. The Mayor has temporarily suspended all parking meter rules beginning at 12:00 p.m. today so that residents in low-lying areas with multiple vehicles can move their vehicles to higher ground. All city parking garages are open and free. Please routinely check you local news outlets for up to date information. The City will issue further information as it becomes available on its website and via Twitter, WSTC -1400AM and News 12 CT.
For further information on storm preparedness visit the American Red Cross website www.redcross.org , and the federal government www.ready.gov for pointers on personal readiness. During the emergency the City will use the Reverse 911 system to send a recorded message to each resident that has a published number.

      We are blessed to have 'shelter arrangements' in Stamford that will allow our beloved companion animals to be with us when the 'worst' hits.

     May I remind you that many shelters across the country do NOT allow pets into (human) emergency shelters, leaving their poor owners to either abandon them or to risk 'life and limb' in order to stay with their animals!

     In any case, if you find that you WILL need to evacuate your residence, please do so in a timely manner and do it sooner-than-later, in order to avoid very dangerous driving conditons.

     Don't forget that we will likely encounter downed trees and powerlines, dangerous winds and flying projectiles and flooding, as well as fellow travelers in distress if we wait too long to seek the safety of one of Stamford's emergency shelters.

     So, please be responsible and act wisely and decisively.  As we all monitor the 'news' today, of course we pray for those who deliberately put themselves in peril saving others.

     Please, dear God, put your Protective Hands over those who put themselves at great risk in service to others, as they travel to and fro, on missions of assistance and rescue.

     Please, Lord, watch over all of us who will be affected by the power of this storm, that we be not afraid, but safe and secure under You.

     We pray these things in our individual traditions, which for Christians is in the Name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.

AMEN. 

     And one more thing: I am truly surprised by some of the comments being made about Stamford's city public safety director Bobby Valentine 'being out of town'.

     In this day and age of computer and smart-phone communication, 'mileage' is often irrelevant.  Are people complaining because they wish Bobby Valentine to 'be here to share the experience'?
     Exactly what will that accomplish, considering all emergency personnel know what their roles are and are on 'alert' and ready to roll?

     In fact, 'emergency preparations and training' are done WELL in advance of any actual emergencies.  

     And when an actual emergency is imminent, a more emergent time schedule is developed and news disseminated as in the 'news release' above.

     You can believe that busy Bobby has been putting in his fair share of work.  I'd think that Stamford would be THANKFUL to have someone like Bobby who is essentially a well-qualified VOLUNTEER (who has saved the city around 100K, to boot!)

     I call his willingness to serve 'REALLY stepping up to the plate'!

     But...."no good deed will go unpunished" and Bobby V. is being 'blessed' by those who are griping about him at this time.

     Emergencies/deaths/funerals/grave illnesses ALWAYS bring out both the very BEST and the very WORST in each and every one of us, every single time...no doubt about it.

Dear Ones:
     At this time, we are under the 'threat' of a substantial Hurricane named 'Irene'.
     As I prepare, myself, to help with emergency sheltering in the area...and secure my own family...I wanted to make sure to share some information with you.
     Please do take the time to make note of what I've written here, so that you can assure the best safety for yourselves and for your loved ones.
     DO IT NOW!  PLEASE!
     The 'emergency hurricane hot-line number' for Stamford is 203-977-8840.  Use it while you can.
     And most of all, make sure that you have appropriate emergency preparedness supplies and are 'good-to-go' for whatever may befall us.
     Please be prepared for the worst of loss of phone systems and power, flooding, wind,  tree-tumbling, structural damage, lack of food, water and all the essentials we ordinarily take for granted.
     Rest assured that our best emergency preparedness people are 'on top of things'.
     While we pray that we need not initiate the highest levels of assistance for this Hurricane Irene, I can tell you that people like Bobby Valentine (Dir. of Emergency Preparedness for the city of Stamford) and Elizabeth Rodriguez of the MRC (Medical Reserve Corps) have things well in hand.
     But I truly love our most precious of Stamford's Health And Social Services former MRC Director Elaine Braccia R.N. and her group of wonderful, caring healing 'Angels'.
     It is a pure joy to have the opportunity to work with such selfless and 'giving' people!
     There are so many good people in Stamford who care about YOU, dear Readers!
     All that is asked is that you 'stay current', be prepared and be responsible for those around you.
     We are not alone on this earth--our sisters and brothers of all ages are here too!

     I've never been known to 'let go of something' that needs to get done.  Like I tell the kids, "If you believe in something, you fight your heart out!" 

     The following announcement by the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars for those of you who do not know or care about such things), is EXACTLY what I've been talking about recently.  It's time to stand UP to the indifference, duplicity, ignorance and ungratefulness of those living in America and 'suckling on the teat' of this Land of Plenty while playing politics.  

     Those with a 'sense of entitlement' ought to be ashamed of themselves, but they're not.  Their positions of power and wealth render them impervious to pleas such as mine.  The power-brokers in D.C., the liberals, the progressives, the Democrats and those from ACORN and other 'corrupt' organizations need a big time reality check.  Their callous indifference to our Warriors'  is heinous, especially in these times. 

     How out of touch are they?  Do they not realize that America has as any enemies within it's borders as we have without?  I dare them to read this VFW article and prove me wrong about their selfish indifference.  Let them enlighten me on this one.  BarbaraKSexton@aol.com

     My only complaint about the article below is that THERE IS  NO SUCH THING AS A FORMER MARINE.  THEY ARE ONLY RETIRED! I know because I am married to a RETIRED Tank Commander who still does a 'military tuck', etc, etc....

      In this day and age of political instability and wars of horrible consequence,  we  would all  do well to be grateful that "Once a Marine, Always a Marine" is a steadfast tenet of the USMC.  Should the day come, Heaven forbid, that 'all hands are needed' for some cataclysmic event, you can BET that every United States Marine on earth will rally to the war cry at once!

     So, please, dear ones (she says softly now....) take a moment to read this piece and do whatever you can to help.  My brother-in-law does transport to and from V.A. hospitals and other places for his fellow retired Marines.  You can do this, too.  Or donate money, time, spread the word and do whatever you can do to help our Warriors, wounded and not.

      I realize some of you may not have given much attention to those who protect your so-called "civil rights", "human rights" and so forth. And some of you always seem to be the first in line for the hand-outs at taxpayer expense.   But there is a new regime in Washington with President Barak Obama and it's time for all of you, too, to get on board and to get involved as an American citizen, especially if you are one.

       I fully realize that some reading this do not like the military. But, I think differently. Not only am I GRATEFUL that someone is there selflessly defending me and my loved ones....I also have a special soft-spot in my heart for the United States Marine Corps.

      Hey, they finally saw fit to issue my husband a wife.

New VFW Program to Assist Former Marines

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, in conjunction with the Wounded Warrior Regiment at Quantico, VA, has agreed to provide a new level of service to recently discharged Wounded Warriors.
Any former Marine who has a claim pending at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or wants to file a claim with VA will be referred to a VFW service officer near them who will be happy to discuss their claim and how to obtain the most correct decisions possible from VA.
VFW Department Service Officers and their staff undergo extensive training in order to represent veterans before the VA. They know the process, what to expect and how decisions are made. More important, they are trained to know which decisions are right, and which are not. Their job is to represent veterans.
If you have filed a claim with VA, or want to file a claim, use the link, below, to contact us. We will refer you to a service officer near you who will talk to you about your claim and outline the help we can give you.

ED HOFFMAN OF THE SIDNEY AMERICAN LEGION 'DARES TO CARE' ABOUT MATTHEW COOKE By REV BARBARA SEXTON DEAR ONES HEALING MINISTRY

     In these days of 'political correctness', it seems to me that there has been nothing but 'minor chatter' about the Fort Hood shooting aftermath.  Heaven forbid we should 'insult anyone's religion', you know?  But here is an article from The Daily Star about a fundraising dinner.  It restores one's faith that there are still  plenty of people in this country who care.  And they care enough to put their time and energy to work in a very tangible way.
     One question I have, though, is WHERE IS UNCLE IN ALL OF THIS? It is to our shame and dishonor that the government--who seems to be willing to support and enable ALL SORTS of causes --does NOT pledge total life-affirming and enabling SUPPORT for soldiers such as Matthew Cooke? Why can't the V.A. be relied upon in this regard either, I wonder?
     The lack of long-term support for the Fort Hood victims by those who SHOULD HAVE ACTED ON THE INTEL ABOUT MAJOR HASAN WHICH THEY NOW ADMIT THEY HAD is shameful. It will be yet another stain on what was once the Kevlar-like fabric of our great Nation.

We need to make our voices heard and then put our money and resources where our mouths are if we are to truly stand up for the principals upon which the United States of America was founded.
Below is the newspaper article, followed by a comment there by 'Thru The Spy Glass' who really lines out my sentiments on lack of sufficient government arena assistance in this case.
     Please join me in this prayer: Please,God, bless Matthew Cooke, age 30 and grant him continued healing and improved health.  May you imbue him with undaunted uplifting of spirit in view of the injuries he has received at the hands of evil. And God, please also bless Ed Hoffman of The Sidney American Legion for his kindness, compassion and energy in organizing this benefit.  May Your Grace be with them and sustain them all the days of their lives, these who 'dare to care'.

More than $13,000 raised for soldier hurt at Fort Hood

SIDNEY _ The Sidney American Legion benefit event Saturday raised more than $13,000 for a soldier hurt in a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas.
Matthew Cooke, 30, formerly of the Sidney area, appeared via a Web video connection and spoke with area residents attending the dinner and auction activities at the Legion Hall at 22 Union St., said Edward ``Ed'' Hoffman, the lead organizer of the benefit.
Hoffman said 308 tickets for a roast beef dinner were sold, and businesses and individuals contributed items for silent and live auction. The preliminary tally was $13,224, he said, but some envelopes, checks and donations are still being counted. The Hulse Brothers Band provided country and classic- rock music, he said.
Hoffman, a member of the Sons of the American Legion, said the event and support for Cooke were ``heartwarming'' examples of the care the community has for its soldiers who serve in the U.S. military forces.
Cooke, of Forward Support Company, 20th Battalion, 36th Brigade, was among 30 people injured when Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly opened fire at Fort Hood on Nov. 5. Twelve soldiers and one civilian died, and Hasan faces criminal charges.
Cooke was shot several times, and he has been credited with saving the life of another soldier.
Cooke's father, Carl Cooke of Sidney, said ``it was great'' to see his son via the Web and that he seems to be doing well.
``He's still alive, and I thank the Lord for that,'' Carl Cooke said Sunday night. The community came together, as it did after the flood of 2006, to help someone in need, he said, adding that the effort as ``awesome.''
Cooke, a 1998 graduate of Afton Central School who also attended school in Sidney, joined the Army in 2005 and previously served in the Marines. He had been scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan this year.

This is a wonderful thing ..So happy to read about a community coming together to help a wounded warrior ...BUT i cant help wondering...where the hell is the govt. and the V.A. Where is the help this man should be getting from our own GOVT.
Why do people have to have a fund raiser when it is the responcibility of or V.A. and DOD to help these men When we elect people to office and they are picked to keep an eye on certain agencys with in the govt > Where are they and what are they thinking ....I would not deny this hero his due , but all this should not have to come from family and friends ...IT SHOULD BE AUTOMATIC...
