By Jesus Diaz--"Astronomers are completely confident that the 45-metre-wide asteroid 2012 DA14 is not going to hit us, passing “only” at 17,200 miles from Earth — the closest encounter with an asteroid ever predicted. It’s a close call, but we will be safe. Given what’s happened in Russia today — what would really happen if their calculations were wrong?

To answer this, first we should find out how much energy could 2012 DA14 release if it crashed against our planet. According to Denton Ebel — Chair of the Division of Physical Sciences and Curator of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the American Museum of National History — three other scientists asked themselves this question in 2010: Robert Marcus, H. Jay Melosh, and Gareth Collins.
Ebel says that Marcus et al calculated the kinetic energy of a 50-metre-wide asteroid with a density of 2.6 grams per cubic centimetre and a speed of 12.7 kilometres per second hitting Earth at a 45 degree angle. This would be a very similar scenario to 2012 DA14, which is only five metres smaller and, in the opinion of Ebel, “could have a density of about 2.6 grams per cubic centimetre” since it is a stony asteroid. He says that the density may be less, since “most asteroids are underdense (lots of void space)” but let’s assume it’s 2.6 grams/cc for the sake of this argument.
Marcus, Melosh and Collins’ calculations resulted in 3.3 Megatons of kinetic energy at entry, with an airburst energy of 2.9 Megatons at about 8.5 km from the surface, “about the cruise altitude of passenger jets.” This means that an asteroid like this would likely explode in the air, releasing the energy equivalent of about 138 atomic bombs like the one that the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay dropped over Hiroshima on August 9, 1945. Or, if you would like a more modern equivalent, 2012 DA14 could explode with the energy of nine W87 nuclear warheads like the ones carried by the American Minuteman III Iintercontinental ballistic missiles."

     We cannot say with any certainty if a large quake will shake CA right now.

Dear Ones:
     Yes, the various images of the sun have been quite spectacular lately.
     Some might even call them 'beautiful', but only in the context of 'beautiful, but daunting'.
     The image above is but a minuscule reflection of the violent and tumultuous universe around us--a universe which, once in a while commands our attention, as it does today.
     Recent NOAA 'Space Warnings' pages have been rift with all sorts of bar, colors, stars and blurts, the likes of which we do not often see all at the same time.

     Surely most of us know by now that 'something's up' because even the popular media has picked up on 'news of the sun'.  We ALL want to know what is going on. 
     Well, for a while now, I've been providing space weather 'Tutorials' in an effort to prepare readers for what we are now witnessing.
     Just click on the keyword 'Tutorials' below and you can easily bring yourselves up-to-date.

     Considering that things will be ratcheting up to a solar activity crescendo sometime in 2014, it might be worth your while to save as reference the links and information I have posted for you here over the past few years.

     What we are witnessing now is the result of a so-called 'solar minimum', wherein the sun's activity becomes 'dimished' overall, on the large-scale of things.
     But, when the sun DOES erupt, the 'show' is more profound than it would be during a 'normal cycle'.  
     Experts tell us that 'solar minimums' come around every one hundred years, or so.

     As such, satellite transmissions will be affected/disrupted due to the increased 'proton storm activity' as charted below due to solar activity right now:

     Dolphins and other creatures whose navigating systems are dependent upon a 'constant, reliable earth's magnetic field' are being beached and otherwise detoured.
     I suspect that migrating birds and other species will also exhibit atypical behaviors and patterns, as well.
     The reason for this is that our planets magnetic field has been 'jogged', but good, as a result of all the solar energy affecting not only the earth's atmosphere, but the earth, itself, as well:

     Additionally, radiation levels at high altitudes will be higher than normal, to the point that air travel patterns will be altered.
     Radio 'bursts' will affect our radio transmissions.  We can expect interruptions in cell phone and computer services.
     And finally, we must prepare ourselves for extremes of weather on earth due to the impact of all this on-going solar flare energy on planet earth.
     Just how this will manifest is not always predictable and we cannot always specifically know, although educated guesses can be made.
     We would do well to be on the lookout for volcanic, tornadic, tsunamic, and seismic activity, most likely coupled with fierce rain, snow, wind, flooding, dust and other weather-related 'events'.
     Below is a 'look' at solar 'wind' at the present time.  You should be aware that there is always a lag-period of from 2-5 days (approx.) between the time energy-in all of it's manifestations--'flares' off the sun, and the moment when it impacts the earth's atmosphere and then earth, itself.

Dear Ones:
     Look at the diagram above.  It is quite profound.
     For those of you who are not acquainted with my 'TUTORIALS', you will not realize what this means.
     To those of you who are familiar with my 'space weather' tutorials as "the Biblical Biochemist" whose 'hobby' is studying things such as this....you will note that this is an unusually 'high' level for the Kp index.
     The above reflects the energy from the sun ('space weather') that is currently affecting the earth or which has the potential to affect the earth in 1-3 days....my estimate.
     We are currently in a period of 'solar minimum', which means that in the world of astrophysics, the sun is 'quiet' for longer periods of time...but when it DOES finally 'erupt' with solar flares and the like, those events are all the more 'profound'.
     Such is the case now.
     There's been quite a 'jog' magnetically for the earth:

     No, I can't tell you exactly 'how' the earth will be affected.  All I can say is that the earth WILL be affected in the form of severe weather, earthquakes, satellite disruptions, perhaps tsunamis, tornadoes and any number of unsavory weather events.
     I'm a little surprised myself to see that things are flaring up like this at this time.  Perhaps the 'only thing' you will notice is some minor interruptions while watching your cable t.v.
     (That would be the pesky proton storm in progress, knocking out those satellite transmissions, by the way.)

     Solar flares are both 'cool' and incredible to witness and recently we've had some 'humdingers'.

     For your edification, solar flare activity is officially at a 'HIGH' with 8 M-class flares and 13-C class flares in the past 2 days.
     It's not that common to have a 'HIGH' flare level, just so you know.
     The area 'most likely to flare' is number 11302.
     Please check out all these sites yourselves.
     Educate yourself as to what may be happening at this time in earth's history.
     I just find it interesting that just as some of the very worst of human nature appears to be manifesting itself here on earth (just read the news!) that solar 'events' are concurrently...'flaring up'!

Dear Ones:

     Yes, you may have noticed that 'satellite dependent' transmissions have been disrupted lately.

     Your cable t.v. has been 'going black', then back 'on'.  

     Sometimes you have to 'reboot' it...and/or your computer...completely.

     Your favorite movies and shows become suddenly 'pixelated' in some kind of frenzied mosaic accompanied by sci-fi-sounding fun-house voices.

     VERY ANNOYING!

     Your 'viewing experience' having been totally ruined, you may have even resorted to (egads!) reading BOOKS or doing something around the house or garden!

     Or maybe you've been having trouble 'getting a signal' with your cell phone. 

     Maybe your phone transmission is so poor lately that you've been forced to use (egads, again!) a land line and are even considering getting a HEARING AID!

     These things are enough to think you're going crazy.

     Simply put, proton activity has spiked (see graph above) due to increased solar activity.  In other words, the sun has been throwing off all kinds of energy, which you understand if you've been following my TUTORIALS (click on keyword 'tutorials' below).

     One of the kinds of energy is a barrage of protons which are responsible for interfering with satellite transmissions, ergo the inconsistent satellite-dependent SERVICES!

     As you can see above, the 'proton problem' is deemed to be a persistent one.

           The really 'crazy' thing about all this, is that there are reputable space scientists who, for whatever reasons, are unwilling or unable to put 'two and two' together for us.

     They simply WILL NOT ALWAYS ADMIT that there is a direct correlation between the situation on the SUN and our weather and other events here on earth!

     I thank God for those scientists who DO speak to the people, because otherwise you would be forced to rely upon 'armchair astrophysicists' like myself, who study this stuff for fun.

     With revised and updated traveling restrictions and perimeter restrictions in place, my advice remains pretty much the same regarding the administration of  potassium iodide tablets.
     YES to all visitors to and residents of Japan, as well as for all service members deployed in or near Japan, per their CO's orders.
     NO to residents outside of Japan at this time.
     The EPA and other agencies are monitoring radiation levels in air, food and water in the USA, Europe, Canada and elsewhere.
     Thus far, no major red flags are raised, although some radiation levels are mildly elevated in some samples.
     In my opinion, there is no cause for concern for those outside of Japan at this time.

     Above is a graph of the 'planetary K index' which is directly related to 'Geomagnetic Storm' activity.  I have shown you how it is correlated with seismic, tornadic and other activity on earth many times recently (see keyword 'TUTORIALS' below).
