Dear Readers:
     I would ask those of you who are so inclined to join me in prayer for all those affected by the European STEC O104:H4 outbreak.
     Preliminary 'reports' are that there are two (or more?) suspected cases among U.S. service members currently based in Germany.

LET US PRAY:

Heavenly Father:

You are the all-in-all of this world and universe and beyond.

We know that your Power is incomprehensible, and we ask you now to spare your children from the ravages of one of nature's most cruel entities, this rogue bacteria.

Please uplift and strengthen those who suffer...fix their bodies that they might bear testimony to your Mighty Work.

Encourage, strengthen and enlighten those who labor in the medical field, that they may prevail in the face of uncertainty.

And when healing is not possible, please, Lord, allow us to understand that we need not fear as long as our faith in You remains strong.

In these days and times, help us to to always remember You first, others next and ourselves last in a true spirit of 'agape'.

Remind us that we are not alone in this world, but that our brothers and sisters are here, too.

We pray these things in our individual traditions, which for Christians is in the Name of the Father, the Son and The Holy Spirit.

"Two U.S. servicemembers based in Germany were suspected of being victims of Europe's E. coli outbreak Friday, as European authorities said the outbreak was "stabilizing."

U.S. military medical officers were awaiting test results from samples taken from the ill servicemembers -- and they could be confirmed late Friday or Monday, according to Phillip Tegtmeier, a spokesman for the US military's Europe Regional Medical Command.

"We're testing [for E. coli] as a precaution," he told military newspaper Stars and Stripes on Friday.

One of the U.S. servicemembers, an airman, remains in the hospital at the Spangahlem Air Base, in western Germany.

The other American reportedly affected was treated and released while based in Heidelberg, 48 miles south of Frankfurt.

The two suspected US military cases were among some 2,000 people hit by the E. coli outbreak across Europe, which so far claimed 18 lives, AFP reported."

I came across this today. It is not about the VFW's actions but I believe it tells us that we must never forget what our great country is to all that live here. We can not allow our country to be destroyed or even divided by the VFW-PAC or anyone else. All members of congress who voted to help spend our country into bankruptcy should read these comments. Many of them would not even understand what this person is talking about. Many more would not even care. I do not think this person came to this country to have it sold to the Chinese or run by Marxists.

35 years ago if you were to tell me that I am going to stand up here speaking in English to a large group of patriots, I’d laugh at you. Every morning I wake up thanking God for putting family and me in the greatest country on earth.

I just want you all to know that the American dream does exist and I am living the American dream. I was asked to speak to you about my experience as a first generation Vietnamese American, but I rather speak to you as an American.

If you hadn’t noticed, I am not white and I feel pretty comfortable with my people.

I am a proud US citizen and here is my proof… It took me 8 years to get it, waiting in endless lines, but I got it and I am very proud of it. Guess what, I did it legally and it ain’t from the state of Hawaii.

I still remember the images of the Tet offensive in 1968. I was six years old. Now you might want to question how a 6year old boy could remember anything. Trust me, those images can never be erased. I can’t even imagine what it was like for young American soldiers, 10,000 miles away from home, fighting on my behalf. 35 years ago, I left South Vietnam to come to America for political asylum. The war had ended. At the age of 13, I left with the understanding that I may or may not ever get to see my siblings or parents again. I was one of the first lucky 100,000 Vietnamese allowed to come to the US. Somehow, my family and I were reunited 5 months later, amazingly, in California. It was a miracle from God.

If you haven’t heard lately that this is the greatest country on earth, let me tell you, IT IS!!! It is the freedom and the opportunities presented to me that put me here with all of you tonight. I also remember the barriers that I had to overcome every step of the way. My high school counselor told me that I could not make it to college due to my poor communication skills. I proved him wrong. I finished college. You see… All you have to do is to give this little boy an opportunity and encourage him to take and run with it. Well, I took the opportunities and here I am. This person standing tonight in front of you could not exist under a socialist/communist environment. By the way, if you think socialism is the way to go, I am sure many people here will chip in to get you a one-way ticket out of here. And if you didn’t know, the only difference between socialism and communism is an AK-47 aiming at your head. That was what I knew and grew up with.

In 1983, I stood with a thousand new immigrants, reciting the pledge of allegiance and listening to the National Anthem for the first time as an American. To this day, I can’t remember anything sweeter and more patriotic than that moment in my life.

Fast forwarding, somehow I finished high school, finished college, and like any other goofball 21 year old kid, I was having a great time with my life, I had a nice job and a nice apartment in Southern California. In someway and somehow, I had forgotten how I got here and why I am here.

One day I was at a gas station, I saw a veteran pumping gas on the other side of the island. I didn’t know what made me do it, but I walked over and asked if he had served in Vietnam. He smiled and said Yes. I shook and held his hand. His eyes started to well up. I walked away as fast as I could and at that very moment, I was emotionally rocked, this was a profound moment in life. I knew something had to change in my life. It was time for me to learn how to be a good citizen. It was time for me to give back.

You see… America is not place on the map; it isn’t a physical location. It is an ideal, a concept. And if you are an American, you must understand the concept, you must buy into this concept and most importantly, you have to fight and defend this concept. This is about Freedom… and not free stuff. And that is why I am standing up here. Brothers and sisters, to be a real American, the very least you must do is to learn English and understand it well. In my humble opinion, you cannot be a faithful patriotic citizen if you can’t speak the language of the country you live in. Take this document of 46 pages… Last I looked on the internet, there wasn’t a Vietnamese translation of the US constitution. It took me a long time to get to the point of being able to converse and until this day, I still struggle to come up with the right words. It’s not easy, but if it’s too easy, it’s not worth doing.

Before I got to know this 46- page document, I learned of the 500,000 Americans who fought for this little boy. I learned of the 58,000 names scribed on the black wall at the Vietnam War memorial. You are my heroes. You are my founders.

When I was eligible to vote, I went out and performed my civic duty. For all of you young people out there, who just turned 18, I encourage you to exercise your duty as an American to be an informed voter no matter where you are or what you do. America fought and died for your rights. DON’T LET HER DOWN!!!

At this time, I would like to ask all the Vietnam veterans to please stand. I thank you for my life. I thank you for your sacrifices, and I thank you for giving me the freedom and the liberties I have today. I now ask All veterans, firefighters, and police officers, to please stand. On behalf of all first generation immigrants, I thank you for your service and may God bless you all and may God bless America! (end speech)

     Don't you just LOVE IT when prudence, common sense and JUSTICE prevail?  It doesn't happen often enough for my taste, but I'll take whatever we can get!
     Too bad freelance Rolling Stone writer Michael Hastings' apparent lack of discretion has now likely adversely affected the total future of 'embedded journalism'.  Hastings could be a 'poster boy' for those believing they'll never be held accountable for anything. 
     It 'felt good...so he did it', you know?  At least I'll give him credit for not acting 'Anonymously' like so many creeps writing in cyberspace do.
     But none of us is without sin and we are capable of 'rebooting ourselves' if we choose to do so.  The Pentagon investigation may well reveal additional unfavorable Intel about our writer here, but he may yet get that 'sweet second chance'. 
     If he is contrite and truly repentant, he will deserve it and God will provide for it.  But if Hastings has a 'Michael Moore Schmarty Pants Mindset', he'll be enjoying the 'pseudo second chance' of those who are as irreverent as he is. 
     They're the ones who feel free to broadcast their truths, while 'outting others' who dare to speak theirs.  In McCrystal's case, it turned out to be what sounds like informal Happy Hour guy-talk, of surprise to no one.  Why Hastings chose to make this a national security issue makes me suspect that he was trying to implement his own 'progressive-lib censorship'.  They figure if they don't like what we say, they simply 'shut us up'.   As if.
     As always, time will tell all here..  I pray for Michael Hastings for the best possible outcome for him and for his loved ones after this fiasco which has up heaved his life.  It goes without saying that I have been praying all along for General McChrystal and his family and staff, too. 
     The Bible tells us in Proverbs 2:7, "He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless." (NIV)  Theologically, this refers to those with spiritual and moral integrity, and not those who are literally 'blameless'. 
     No one is perfect.  We are told that the person who fears the Lord is one who listens to, respects, and abides by God's rules for us.  Those who do so will find His favor, a promise offered to everyone who is willing to try to do his or her 'very best'--a thing not so easy to do, in all cases.
        In the end, 'the Hastings legacy', at the very least, will be that he could have 'been his so-truthful-self' in a much more honorable way.  But maybe I'm being too hard on him since the poor guy shot himself in the foot, but good. 
      I just hope that the pain of his self-inflicted injury does not embitter Hastings, prompting more recklessness and foster vindictiveness of some sort.  I pray that this serves rather as a 'turning point' and that Hastings is eventually able to move past this whole thing.
      We can look to that possibility with welcome relief considering the sad state of journalism in America today.

Dear Ones:
     Here is something that may help authorized TRICARE users to improve their health care data storage and tracking.  TRICARE Online (TOL) is a web site of the Military Health System. The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Health Affairs and the TRICARE Management Activity provides it as a public service for those who qualify.
     In this day and age of terrorism, natural disasters and other disruptions, it really is a good idea for everyone to make sure their medical data is preserved and secured.  As a matter of fact, I urge each and every one of you to be sure to include copies of your medical records in your 'Family Disaster Supplies Kit'  http://www.ctredcross.org/pdf/Your_Family_Disaster_Supplies_Kit.pdf as recommended by the American Red Cross.  As a member of the MRC (Medical Reserve Corps) in CT http://www.cityofstamford.org/content/25/52/140/214/364/402/103692/default.aspx  I will be giving you some valuable tips in the future so that when the need arises, you will be able to evacuate to safety--or shelter 'in-place' should--God forbid--it be necessary.
