"Happy 'Rare Disease Day' To All" By Rev. Barbara Sexton Dear Ones Healing Ministry

Dear Ones:
It's not 'fun' and it's not 'popular'.  But here I am to tell you about 'Rare Disease Day 29 February 2012'.
Yes, this is the day where 'the powers that be' turn their attentions to 'orphan' diseases...and to those conditions which can make life miserable, but which affect only the 'few' and thus receive scant attention:
LINK: http://www.rarediseaseday.org/country/us/united-states
LINK: http://rarediseaseday.us/
LINK: http://www.rarediseaseday.org/country/us/united-states
This is a 'global effort', as it should be for the kind of things that affect ALL humans, regardless of where they happen to be on the globe.
Can there be any doubt that ALL peoples of 'good faith' wish nothing but the 'best' and 'the best of care' for those in need?
     Certainly not!
So, if you are suffering from (or are the love one of) a 'rare disease', you are keenly aware of what this 'leap year day' of February 29, 2012 means.
It means that you are not forgotten.  It means that you can rest assured there are those who care.  You can know that there definitely ARE researchers and others who have your interests at heart.
And, most of all, it means you have HOPE for a cure, and if not cure, for a treatment..and if not a treatment, then the hope of a 'prevention'.
In this spirit of communal compassion, I ask that each of you reading this takes the time to realize that, truly, 'there but for the grace of God, go each of ourselves and our loved ones'.
Today is a day to appreciate the gains of modern science, while understanding and being grateful for our Creator who loves us so much.
God made us His magnificent creation!  Let us remember--today and all days--to never take His gift of life to us for granted.
And never let us forget that, as Christians, when we pray in the powerful name of Jesus Christ...
     ALL things are possible!
In Christ's Name,
Rev. Barbara Sexton

"A Nerd-Dork-Geek-Dweeb Venn Diagram-Which Are You?" By Reverend Barbara Sexton "The Biblical Biochemist-Where Science Meets the Cross"

LINK:  www.greatwhitesnark.com/2010/03/25/difference-between-nerd-dork-and-geek-explained-in-a-venn-diagram/
From Rev. Barb:
Dear Ones:
A little 'change of pace' today, with the above Venn diagram.  'Great White Snark' came up with a good one here.
Most likely you can readily classify yourself, but if not, here's a quiz you can take: www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid=9935030990046738815
And here are my results if you're 'curious':
The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test

Your result for The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test ...

Modern, Cool Nerd

83 % Nerd, 52% Geek, 30% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.

Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!

Congratulations!

Your Analysis (Vertical line = Average)

  • nerdiness Distribution
You scored 83% on nerdiness, higher than 93% of your peers.
  • geekosity Distribution
You scored 52% on geekosity, higher than 77% of your peers.
  • dork points Distribution
You scored 30% on dork points, higher than 47% of your peers.
Just so you know--no kidding--during my undergrad years we used SLIDE RULES --'nerd rules', as we called them.
Some of the guys (I went to an 'all male bastion of academic knowledge') wore their slide rules on their belts, which would hang down vertically and 'swing' a bit as they walked.
Some 'slide rule holders' (like the heavy leather ones) were more 'prestigious' than others, just as the slide rules, themselves, came in everything from cheapo white plastic (mine) to more formidable, wider and more scale-intensive laminated wood ones.
I guess even in the world of nerdo-academia, size matters as only guys can make it matter.
Many used pocket protectors, too, but these were pretty much 'standard issue'.
Me, I'd just lash the thing down on top of my textbook, along with a rubber-banded handful of pen, pencils, compass, and various 'implements' and fasten the pile together with an elastic book band.
Many Blessings To You
Reverend Barbara Sexton

"Forget Judgement Day: CDC Issues 'Zombie Apocalypse' Preparedness Plan" By Reverend Barbara Sexton The Biblical Biochemist-Where Science Meets the Cross"

 Dear Readers:
It's no joke!  No less than the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also known as the 'CDC', has come out with a bonafide 'Zombie Apocalypse Plan'.
Without further ado, I urge you to check out the LINK below for your reading pleasure...or displeasure...depending upon your point of view, that is.
Probably it's all in 'good fun', this legitimizing of the 'zombie' genre so popular today, by what is supposed to be a drop-dead, serious, 'scientific' governmental entity.
     Uh-huh.
One hopes and prays that our friends at the CDC remain ever-vigilant for that which is REALLY scary and for REAL diseases such as the rare and unheard of case of a previously healthy 14 year old boy in Uruguay being killed by western equine (horse) encephalitis.
LINK: http://www.cdc.gov/eid/content/17/5/952.htm
     But why be so gloomy?
For now we enjoy this chuckle, with the hope that any 'real life' zombies encountered are every bit as 'slow and sloppy' as their movie counterparts and thus can be readily dispatched.
I can't think of any known medical illnesses, conditions or syndromes at the present time which completely 'resemble' zombie-ism, but if one does come to mind, rest assured I will write about it here.
Do be sure to sign up for Reverend Barbara Sexton's FREE NEWSLETTER just in case(see below) and stay current with all 'Zombie News' from a biochemist's viewpoint as it is breaking
As it is, a number true 'zombie-believers' are convinced of the existence of our flesh-eating friends, and that is no joke to those who are truly afraid.
Perhaps the CDC decided that, 'imaginary or not', it would be best to address the zombie phenomenon once and for all and put some minds to rest.
Yet...I don't know about you, but checking out the CDC LINK below is not exactly comforting!
All that 'emergency-preparedness' talk is SKEERY!
It is said that 'art imitates life', though in this case, I would say more correctly that it is 'science' that is now imitating art.
And if that isn't weird enough, the CDC timed the release of this article to coincide with what some predict to be Judgement Day, May 21, 2011.
What are the feds trying to tell us?
Crazy though it all is, maybe it's all in good fun and we all have nothing to worry about at all.
Maybe this zombie page is all just a ploy to get people to read up on 'preparedness issues'.
Then, again, maybe there ARE zombies amongst us and we are being warned.
      LOOK OOOOOOOOOOUT!!!
God Bless You
Reverend Barbara Sexton

Natural Asthma Treatments-Part Two 'Your Hope & The Gameplan' By Rev Barbara Sexton "The Biblical Biochemist-Where Science Meets the Cross"   Dear Ones:  Asthma is a very common 'condition'. Sometimes it is sporadic, with episodes being triggered, perhaps, by exposure to certain foods or odd air-borne allergens, such as fiber particles or certain 'dusts'. Sometimes it is 'chronic'...or can become chronic...depending upon what is done or not done, what is 'taken' or not taken. Sadly, sometimes asthma medications and treatments contribute to this revolving door effect. Anyone who is 'inhaler dependent' or has a child who is, knows the uncertainty and discomfort this causes. Pretty much, one's life revolves around "THE INHALER":

"INTERNATIONAL UPDATE 4/7/11--Do You Need To Take Potassium Iodide? A Biochemist's Recommendations" By Reverend Barbara Sexton "The Biblical Biochemist-Where Science Meets the Cross"

Dear Ones:
Here is my latest UPDATE for you regarding the need or non-need for potassium iodide tablets/capsules/liquid preparations in view of Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Plant's disaster.
My entire 'biochemist's perspective', complete advice and recommendations can be found at the link below:
LINK: http://dearoneshealingministry.blogspot.com/2011/03/biochemists-advice-about-potassium.html
The '4-7-11 UPDATE', itself, found at the bottom of the above detailed article, is as follows, verbatim:
________________________________________________

UPDATED Thurs 4-7-11 By Rev. Barbara Sexton
With revised and updated traveling restrictions and perimeter restrictions in place, my advice remains pretty much the same regarding the administration of  potassium iodide tablets.
YES to all visitors to and residents of Japan, as well as for all service members deployed in or near Japan, per their CO's orders.
NO to residents outside of Japan at this time.
The EPA and other agencies are monitoring radiation levels in air, food and water in the USA, Europe, Canada and elsewhere.
Thus far, no major red flags are raised, although some radiation levels are mildly elevated in some samples.
In my opinion, there is no cause for concern for those outside of Japan at this time.

"ASPCA: DNA Evidence Revolutionizes Cruelty Cases in NYC" Posted By Reverend Barbara Sexton "The Biblcial Biochemist-Where Science Meets the Cross"

THREE CHEERS For the ASPCA 'HEROS' who have utilized the latest technology to catch, prosecute and sentence CRUEL CAT TORTURERS!  Studies show that those who are CRUEL TO ANIMALS are invariably ALSO ABUSERS OF HUMANS.
WE ARE GOING TO CRACK DOWN on CRIMINALS WHO ABUSE ANIMALS just as we do ON THOSE WHO ABUSE HUMANS with the BEST THAT SCIENCE HAS TO OFFER!
DNA Analysis has been one of MY AREAS OF EXPERTISE AS A BIOCHEMIST (way back to the beginnings of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, for those who are curious) since it's inception.
I AM GRATIFIED that this discipline has helped the field of forensics so much as to help APPREHEND AND CONVICT those who RAPE, ABUSE and KILL both humans and animals"-Rev. Barbara Sexton
DNA Evidence Revolutionizes Cruelty Cases in NYC

On March 8, two Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) cases resulted in landmark felony convictions—thanks in large part to DNA evidence. The ASPCA first performed DNA analysis related to an animal cruelty case in September 2008, but these recent cases are the first in which DNA has been entered as evidence during trial.
Dr. Robert Reisman, Medical Coordinator of Animal Cruelty Cases at the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, hailed the March verdicts as groundbreaking. “DNA analysis is pretty sophisticated science at this point,” says Dr. Reisman, who testified and conducted the forensic investigation in both cases, “and it’s very powerful evidence for a juror to hear.”
The cases also shine a light on HLE Agents’ resourcefulness and dedication, say both Dr. Reisman and HLE Assistant Director Joseph Pentangelo, who credited the Agents for “making good use of the newest tools to fight animal cruelty.”
The first conviction was for a 2008 incident in which a cat was doused with lighter fluid and set on fire. While investigating a Brooklyn building where the cat spent time, Special Agent Adam Gankiewicz found a vacant room with charred tile flooring—and in that room was a piece of what appeared to be skin.
DNA testing, performed at the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the University of California Davis Veterinary School, showed that the tissue matched that of the feline victim, establishing the crime scene. Based on this evidence, the perpetrator, 20-year-old Angelo Monderoy, was convicted of aggravated animal cruelty (and also of arson and burglary). He faces three to 15 years in prison and possible deportation to his native Trinidad.
DNA also identified the umbrella that Lordtyshon Garrett of Manhattan used in 2009 to beat a cat, who sustained a punctured lung and ultimately died. Special Agent Deborah Ryan had saliva from the umbrella matched to the DNA of the victim, which, along with Dr. Reisman’s testimony that the bite marks on the umbrella were defensive, helped clinch the case. Garrett, 33, was found guilty of aggravated cruelty, animal cruelty and criminal mischief and faces up to two years in prison.
“These cases pave the way for others in New York,” Dr. Reisman says, noting that two more DNA-supported animal cruelty trials are pending. “They could set precedent for other states as well.”
To learn how you can help end animal abuse, please visit www.fightcruelty.org
Please, dear ones, if you have the slightest compassion for all living things--human and animal--please support the fine work of the ASPCA like I do.
God Bless these FIGHTERS who protect our precious creatures every day!
And May God Bless You for joining the fight.
Love,
Rev. Barbara Sexton

Relistor sold in single vials also is unaffected by this recall. Pfizer and Progenics advise patients using the Relistor kit not to use the Triad alcohol prep pads included in the Relistor packaging for 1 X 7 kits and 1 X 2 starter kits. When preparing to take their Relistor injection, patients should use an alcohol prep pad from a company other than Triad, or use a sterile gauze pad with isopropyl alcohol.
[UPDATED 01/21/2011] Triad alcohol prep pads packaged for use in the U.S. with Betaseron (interferon beta 1-b) should not be used by patients. There is no involvement or potential contamination of the Betaseron vial or other components in the Betaseron U.S. packaging. This issue is confined to the actual Triad alcohol prep products. Triad alcohol prep products are not used in Betaseron packaging outside of the United States. Bayer has halted shipments of Betaseron to its distribution network, until it can affect a replacement for the alcohol prep pad.
Bayer is instructing patients using Betaseron to immediately discontinue using the Triad alcohol prep pads included in the Betaseron packaging and dispose of those pads in the trash. When preparing to take their Betaseron injection, patients should use an alternative alcohol prep pad that is not subject to this Triad recall or use a sterile gauze pad in conjunction with isopropyl alcohol.
[UPDATED 01/14/2011] The Triad Group alcohol prep pads are co-packaged and distributed with Genentech medicines Boniva Injection, Fuzeon, Nutropin A.Q.Pen, Pegasys, and TNKase to customers in the United States. Genentech medicines are not contaminated and may continue to be used in accordance with the package insert. Patients and healthcare providers should not use the alcohol prep pads packaged with these medicines and should instead use an alternate alcohol prep pad that is not involved with the Triad Group recall.
God Bless You

"Watson Announces Important Alert Regarding FDA-Recalled Triad Alcohol Pads Packed With Their Prostate Cancer Drug Trelstar" By Reverend Barbara Sexton "The Biblical Biochemist-Where Science Meets The Cross"

TRELSTAR is a white to slightly yellow lyophilized cake. When reconstituted, TRELSTAR has a milky appearance. It contains a pamoate salt of triptorelin, a synthetic decapeptide agonist analog of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). The chemical name of triptorelin pamoate is 5-oxo-L-prolyl-L-histidyl-L-tryptophyl-L-seryl-L-tyrosyl-D-tryptophyl-L-leucyl-L-arginyl-L-prolylglycine amide (pamoate salt). The empirical formula is C64H82N18O13 · C23H16O6 and the molecular weight is 1699.9. The structural formula is:

The TRELSTAR products are sterile, lyophilized biodegradable microgranule formulations supplied as single dose vials. http://pi.watson.com/data_stream.asp?product_group=1684&p=pi&language=E
Dear Ones:
Problems arising from TRIAD alcohol pads and swabs potentially contaminated with Bacillus cereus continue on.  Please note that the manufacturers of all the injectables involved in these recalls maintain that the drugs, themselves, are SAFE!
It is imperative that patients NOT USE the Triad alcohol prep pads included with injectables, in this case for Trelstar aka triptorelin pamoate for injectable suspension.
Trelstar is a form of 'hormone therapy' for prostate cancer.  In the common vernacular, it is an agent of 'chemical castration'.
Specifically, Trelstar is a Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, which means it 'mimics' natural GnRH  and is capable of 'blocking' GnRH receptors in the brain.
(Yes...the 'brain' really IS our major sex organ as I have said many times before, a concept which is finally enjoying the attention it deserves from my 'traditionally-oriented' colleagues.
See: "Mercury Poisoning Makes Birds Act Homosexual LINK: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/12/101203-homosexual-birds-mercury-science/
Then read my trail-blazing alternative biomedicine 'piece' on how the drugs we take, environmental factors and the food we eat affect likewise affect our 'sexuality'.  LINK: http://dearoneshealingministry.blogspot.com/2010/09/drugs-we-take-in-our-food-which-affect.html )
Trelstar (or a similar GnRH agonist) 'fools' brain receptors into thinking all of it's GnRH receptors are being 'blocked' by the 'real thing'.
The pituitary thus becomes 'stimulated' and it's secretion of FSH and LH eventually decreases.  This, in turn, ultimately causes the testes to produce less testosterone, as well as reducing PSA levels.* (please see my note below)
Many cases of prostate cancer respond positively to efforts to decrease testosterone and this is why Trelstar is as useful as it is as a pharmaceutical option in prostate cancer treatment.
According to the data Watson shows, Trelstar, in fact, is extremely effective:
"6-month Trelstar 22.5 mg maintains testosterone levels similar to those achieved with surgical castration.     Here are the specifics from the FDA Recalls site:

Mean testosterone level of 12.8 ng/dL in months 2 through 122
97.5% of patients achieved castrate serum testosterone level by day 291
98.3% of patients were below castrate level at month 6 and month 122"
http://www.trelstar.com/hcp-trelstar-22.5-mg.asp

"FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - February 4, 2011 -Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NYSE: WPI), announced today the market recall of alcohol prep pads manufactured by Triad Group which is a component of a convenience kit that is distributed with its products. Triad Group is recalling the alcohol prep pads packaged with products, including Watson’s Trelstar® (triptorelin pamoate for injectable suspension) product, due to potential contamination of the pads with the bacteria, Bacillus cereus, which could result in life threatening infections, especially in at-risk populations, including immune suppressed and surgical patients.

The Company emphasized that there is no potential contamination of the Trelstar product, the MIXJECT® system or components in the Trelstar packaging, other than the Triad alcohol prep pad. The Trelstar drug and the MIXJECT® system have not been affected in any way.

Watson has ceased shipments of Trelstar packaging components that incorporate the Triad alcohol pad while it pursues options to remove or replace the prep pad. Convenience kits will not be available in Trelstar commercial packages until new convenience kits incorporating a replacement alcohol prep pad are available for distribution in March 2011. The Company also noted that it was cooperating fully with the FDA, and notifying its customers.

Watson instructs customers to immediately discontinue the use of the Triad alcohol prep pad included in the Trelstar convenience kit and to appropriately dispose of the entire convenience kit. The Company also recommends customers use an alternative alcohol prep pad product that is not involved with this recall, or to use a sterile gauze pad in conjunction with isopropyl alcohol as an alternative. Both prep pads and gauze should be available at your local pharmacy.

The last thing a prostate cancer patient needs is any kind of infection at an injection site, especially with all the hot-flashes you have to contend with.
So please take care with the alcohol prep pads you may be using at this time!
If anything 'good' can be gleaned from this Triad situation, it is this: for once, health care professionals are finally advising that isopropyl alcohol and a sterile gauze pad are all it takes to cleanse an injection site.
Who knows?  Maybe common sense will prevail and health care cost-savings may be realized in some small way with this Triad alcohol prep pad and swab stick recall.
Alcohol prep pads are not all that expensive in and of themselves.  But when they are fanci-packed in so-called 'Convenience Kits',  packaging costs can sky-rocket, for patients, hospitals and in this case, for the drug-manufacturers themselves.
I pray this information is of use to you or someone you love.
God Bless You

"Contaminated Alcohol Swabs Recalled in U.S., Canada & Europe Under Brand Names: Triad, Cardinal Health, PSS Select, VersaPro, Boca/ Ultilet, Moore Medical, Walgreens, CVS, Conzellin Brands PART ONE" By Reverend Barbara Sexton "The Biblical Biochemist-Where Science Meets the Cross"

Dear Ones:
There is a common misconception that agents such as soaps and alcohol which are intended to clean the skin are impervious to microbial contamination by their very nature.
     FALSE.
In fact, soap and water solutions can be GREAT culture media for deadly pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, among others.
And alcohol used as an antiseptic can similarly be contaminated, in this case below with the microbe known as Bacillus cereus (pronounced bah-SILL-us SEER-ee-us (like 'serious' in English)
Contrary to the somewhat cavalier tone of Triad's initial voluntary recall notice below, Bacillus cereus can, indeed, cause a nasty skin infection or worse, as will be addressed in Dear Ones Healing Ministry UPDATES in my FREE 2011 NEWSLETTER.
(Note: You can have all breaking health news sent right to your email box by signing up for Rev. Barb's FREE 2011 HEALTH NEWSLETTER.  Just send your name and email address with 'please send me your Free 2011 Health Newsletter' in the subject line to BarbaraKSexton@aol.com and that's it!  Nothing else is required and no data is collected.  Sign-up now and get important breaking health news explained in an understandable way by 'The Biblical Biochemist-Where Science Meets the Cross'.  Don't let your family and other loved ones go 'unprotected', especially with the flu season now fully upon us with spiking activity.)
Contaminated alcohol swabs used as an antiseptic may not cause a problem on healthy, unbroken skin, but remember that these swabs are usually intended for use with an injectable drug.  This means the skin barrier is breeched, which sends any surface microbes (including disease-causing pathogens ) underneath the skin into the tissue below.
The subject of 'pathogenicity' (the ability of a microbe to 'infect' someone and cause a disease) is not as straight-forward as the 'cookbook-medicine mentality' traditional medicine would have it be.
As an example, I give you the various E. coli species.  In the gut, some E.coli species are fine...even desirable... as they assure proper function of our digestive systems.
But put this E.coli, whatever the sub-species, somewhere else such as in the female urinary and reproductive tract (a not uncommon result of improper wiping, poor hand-washing technique, vigorous sex, unclean undergarments, etc) and infection and disease result.
The hapless female ends up with bladder/kidney infection and/or vaginitis.
Simply put from my alternative medicine perspective (having been trained in traditional biomedicine initially), 'pathogenicity' is most accurately described as having 'the wrong microbe in the wrong place at the wrong time'.
And you can quote me on that.
I have personally witnessed awful infections caused by what are generally considered to be 'low-grade' pathogens as a result of 'the wrong microbe in the wrong place at the wrong time.'
In fact, in my jump into the world of drug and cosmetic manufacturing, I 'cut my teeth' on a case involving just this, brought in as 'fresh blood' in an interesting case involving products for our military service members in the field, amongst others.
For various reasons, I see similarities and potential similarities with the Triad alcohol prep pad and swab bacterium in question here and the case I mention above.  Thus I will dissect the current situation with this in mind.
Just to be clear, the B. cereus species contaminating the Triad products is either yet to be sub-typed by the FDA or if it already has been, awaits disclosure.  The nomenclature "Bacillus cereus" actually covers a wide spectrum of variants, including B. anthracis, also known as Anthrax.
"Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive, facultatively aerobic sporeformer whose cells are large rods and whose spores do not swell the sporangium. These and other characteristics, including biochemical features, are used to differentiate and confirm the presence B. cereus, although these characteristics are shared with B. cereus var. mycoides, B. thuringiensis and B. anthracis. Differentiation of these organisms depends upon determination of motility (most B. cereus are motile), presence of toxin crystals (B. thuringiensis), hemolytic activity (B. cereus and others are beta hemolytic whereas B. anthracis is usually nonhemolytic), and rhizoid growth which is characteristic of B. cereus var. mycoides."
LINK:  http://www.fda.gov/food/foodsafety/foodborneillness/foodborneillnessfoodbornepathogensnaturaltoxins/badbugbook/ucm070492.htm     The B. cereus family of pathogens are known to infect humans, animals, affecting mainly those who are weak and/or immunocompromised and/or suffer the conequences of  cancer, diabetes, post-transplant, steroid-therapy, etc. and the therapies and treatments thereof.
Despite some of the sources claiming that B. cereus is relatively 'harmless' causing but mild food-poisoning, the bacterial species affecting Triad alcohol prep pads very much deserves it's place in the FDA's 'BBB' ('Bad Bug Book') LINK: http://www.fda.gov/food/foodsafety/foodborneillness/foodborneillnessfoodbornepathogensnaturaltoxins/badbugbook/ucm070492.htm
It is a law of microbiology, that soil-born pathogens are amongst the worst of all disease-causing microbes, be they aerobes (needing oxygen to live) or anaerobes (not needing oxygen to live.)
The irony of a skin antiseptic being a source of contamination itself is obviously manifold.  Many seem to dismiss B. cereus as a major concern when it comes to cutaneous infection, pointing to the fact that this bacterial species primarily causes food-poisoning.
But to do so insults the reality of known cases of severe cutaneous B. cereus infections all over the world as well as an extensive cutaneous outbreak in healthy military cadets in Georgia.
LINK:  http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5448a3.htm
The link above is from the MMWR (Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report) website.  Cases do not get published on or in MMWR unless they are deserving of it, as well I know from the field.
I'll be dissecting this Triad alcohol prep pad recall situation in a series of articles, including some basic 'background' on the biochemistry of topical antiseptics.  (Note: antiseptics are intended for use on skin and tissues, whereas 'disinfectants' are meant for 'hard', non-living surfaces)
In fact, there are many factors that are overlooked, misunderstood and misinterpreted regarding wound healing and the use of so-called 'antiseptics' when it comes to wound-healing.
As it happens, those of us in the field of alternative medicine often 'see' cases of intractable wounds which fail to heal after numerous vigorous attempts by the medical establishment.
Question all you want the potions and powders of herbal medicine--they can sometimes work when nothing else will, as in the case of chronic diabetic ulceration.
And we 'alternative health care providers' were using the amino acid L-lysine in our topical preparations for herpes sufferers long before the drugstore shelves became stocked with the lysine-containing lip balms and ointments commonly available today.
"In treatment of disease and conditions which do not easily 'resolve', combine the 'best of both' of traditional and alternative medicine", I say.
And use the 'best of both', similarly, when confronted with matters such as the Triad Recall under discussion here.
To begin and to begin understanding how an alcohol antiseptic can become contaminated, it is important to know that it is not so much the alcohol moiety of the prep pads and swabs that it at fault, as it is that of the 'water' component.
Everyone knows SOAP needs WATER to work properly.  But did you know that the water component is critical in order for the alcohol to 'do it's thing', also?
It's true.  And it's due to the characteristics of bacterial cell walls and the ability of an antiseptic to act as a 'surfactant' and as a bacterial cell wall 'disruptor',
Suggestions over the years after the first use of 'carbolic acid' (phenol) were to use high-strength/low water alcohol concentrations such as  90% isopropyl alcohol.
However, higher alcohol percentage anticeptics met with poorer test results than did preparations with lower alcohol concentrations.
They don't kill bacteria as well and are more likely to irritate and damage skin, which can only invite enhanced infection and inhibition of satisfactory wound-healing.  Indeed, it has also been my observation over the years that the use of ever-present 'povidone-iodine' solutions in the treatment of chronic wounds can substantially cause more negative effects on tissue than previously believed.
Hence, after years of study, most of the alcohol prep pads and swabs in use today contain 70% isopropyl alcohol, which is considered to be an ideal concentration.
Our skin and everything we touch and live with is contaminated with good and bad microbes.
Obviously the last thing we need is for something intended to clean the skin prior to injection to be contaminated with B. cereus, a spore-forming bacteria which can cause chronic and serious skin infections...or with any other microbe, for that matter, pathogen or not.
We don't need 'the wrong thing in the wrong place at the wrong time'.  Surely, the most innocuous microbe 'injected' below the skin has the potential to cause both cutaneous and systemic infection.
Worse still, the spores of B. cereus are difficult to kill and a simple alcohol swab will NOT do the job!  In the lab we use the autoclave (steam under pressure) to kill spores.
High temperature incineration can also be effective in killing spores, though it is less practical for use in many settings.  Similarly, 'irradiation' is used to sterilize things like bandages and certain medical devices, which begs the question...
How did Triad alcohol prep pads get contaminated, how many of the recalled pad are contaminated and what is the source of said contamination?  What happened with their raw material, hard component, in-line, final product and 'retains' testing, not to mention 'stability testing'?
The initial 1/4/11 Triad voluntary recall did not grab my attention initially, but subsequent FDA updates on 1/6/11 and updated 1/14/11 certainly have.
LINK: http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm239319.htm
Who knows?  Maybe the scope of the B. cereus contamination will be small and limited in scope.  Still, it has the potential to be far-reaching and all I can say is 'caveat emptor'
This 21st century has seen a plethora of previously 'non-pathogenic and non-ubiquitous' microbial species....including bacteria....evolve into species with grossly increased virulence as pathogens.
Among these are "Salmonella spp.,Clostridium botulinum, Staphylococcus aureus, Campylobacter jejuni, Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio cholerae O1, Vibrio cholerae non-O1,Vibrio parahaemolyticus and other vibrios, Vibrio vulnificus, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus, Aeromonas hydrophila and other spp., Plesiomonas shigelloides, Shigella spp,Miscellaneous enterics, Streptococcus, Enterovirulent Escherichia coli Group (EEC Group), Escherichia coli - enterotoxigenic (ETEC), Escherichia coli - enteropathogenic (EPEC), Escherichia coli O157:H7 enterohemorrhagic (EHEC), Escherichia coli - enteroinvasive (EIEC),Parasitic Protozoa and Worms, Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Cryptosporidium parvum,Cyclospora cayetanensis, Anisakis sp. and related worms, Diphyllobothrium spp., Nanophyetus spp., Eustrongylides sp., Acanthamoeba and other free-living amoebae, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura, Viruses, Hepatitis A virus, Hepatitis E virus, Rotavirus, Norwalk virus group, Other gastroenteritis viruses, Other Pathogenic Agents, Prions and Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies."
LINK: http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/FoodborneIllness/FoodborneIllnessFoodbornePathogensNaturalToxins/BadBugBook/default.htm
Don't let anyone tell you that microbial contamination of what you use in and on your body is NOT of major concern, ever.
And don't let a drug-maker tell you that they are exercising 'an abundance of caution', even while acknowledging the seriousness of the contamination of it's products...whatever the extent of it and whatever it's source.
(Read Triad's 'mixed message' highlighted in green below.)
Know that B. cereus is also causes chronic skin infections that are difficult to eradicate though less aggressive than necrotizing fasciitis caused by the Streptococcus bacterium.  Most of us are aware of it.
"Necrotizing fasciitis (occasionally described by the media as "the flesh-eating bacteria") is a rapidly progressive disease which destroys muscles, fat, and skin tissue. LINK: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/groupastreptococcal_g.htm
      B. cereus can also cause a condition known as 'keratitis'. It is considered to be a pathogen akin tBacillus anthracis known as the infective agent in systemic and cutaneous Anthrax.
"Bacillus anthracis, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus thuringiensis are members of the Bacillus cereus group of bacteria.  This determination is not only a formal matter of taxonomy but may also have consequences with respect to virulence and the potential of horizontal gene transfer within the B. cereus group."
LINK: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC110590
What this means that it is only a matter of time before plain old B. cereus turns into a virulent rogue pathogen via transfer of genetic material between 'bacterial cousins'.
It is a law of microbiology that the natural tendency is for a microbe...be it a bacterium, a virus, a prion or whatever to tend to mutate into a state more favorable to it's replication and survival...which means to a more VIRULENT state.
Of course various factors 'help' this process along, including, but not limited to:
--airline travel which increases exposure risk to all microbes, pathogenic or not
--the use and overuse of pharmacological agents which may inadvertently prompt enhanced mutation rates in microbes
--the 'deliberate or inadvertent' introduction of experimentally manipulated or native 'good' or pathogenic microbes into the environment
--natural disasters which result in the uncovering and or release of microbes long 'hunkered down' such as the the virus responsible for the 1918 (Spanish) Influenza Pandemic.
--continued 'core sampling' and exploration and disruption of the earth's crust by man which have the potential to dislodge long-sequestered microbes resulting in 'surface exposure'.
--cruel, unhygienic 'animal food-farming practices' which provide an ideal state for contamination of the human food supply via 'genetic transfer' between different bacterial species resulting in 'superbugs' which infect animals and then humans
--the use of irrigation water contaminated with 'superbugs' on produce crops intended for human and animal consumption
--the feeding of 'offal' (the entrails, internal organs, i.e. the guts and other undesirable parts left over after processing animals for consumption) to animals themselves
--and last, but not least, acts of God which affect believers and non-believers, alike.
When B. cereus manifests in it's 'food'born' state, causing what is commonly known as 'food poisoning', it is difficult to distinguish from Clostridium perfringens, also known as the infectious agent which causes 'gas gangrene'.
"Although no specific complications have been associated with the diarrheal and vomiting toxins produced by B. cereus, other clinical manifestations of B. cereus invasion or contamination have been observed. They include bovine mastitis, severe systemic and pyogenic infections, gangrene, septic meningitis, cellulitis, panophthalmitis, lung abscesses, infant death, and endocarditis."
LINK: http://www.fda.gov/food/foodsafety/foodborneillness/foodborneillnessfoodbornepathogensnaturaltoxins/badbugbook/ucm070492.htm     There is no justification for this attitude at all if even one person is harmed.  Stay tuned for additional articles in my FREE 2011 NEWSLETTER and here online and for additional updates from Triad and the FDA, including my comments on "Genentech Informs Customers Of Important Information"

Please be careful and check your medical supplies today!
In the meantime, use sterile gauze with 70% isopropyl alcohol to wipe-down before injecting, being careful to use as close to 'aseptic technique' as you can.
Be sure to consult your health care provider for individual advice!
God Bless and Keep You
